Ryan James Watson (born 7 July 1993 in Crewe) is an English footballer who plays as a central midfielder for Northampton Town on loan from Leicester City.

Career

Wigan Athletic

Watson made a progress throughout as a youth player for Wigan Athletic of the Premier League. Watson played for the Wigan Athletic Development Squad for the 2011–12 season.[3]

On 10 August 2012 it was announced that Watson would join Football League Two side Accrington Stanley F.C. on loan until January 2013.[4] Watson made his professional debut for Accrington Stanley against Morecambe on 4 September 2012 in the Football League Trophy.[5] He returned early from his loan spell on 13 September 2012.[6]

In the summer of 2013, Watson was among ten players to be released by the club.[7] The next year, Watson signed a contract extension with the club, keeping him until 2016.[8]

Leicester City

Having featured in all four of Leicester's Barclays Under-21 Premier League matches on trial and impressing both in central midfield and at right-back, Ryan signed for the remainder of the 2013-14 season as part of Leicester City's Development Squad.[9] Watson made his Leicester City debut, making his first start in the 0-1 defeat to Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup 2nd round on 26 August 2014.[10]

On 1 September 2014, Watson joined Northampton Town on loan until the start of January.[11] Watson made his debut in the 2-0 victory against Dagenham & Redbridge on 6 September 2014.[12] Having made 5 appearances for Northampton, Watson returned to Leicester City on 2 October 2014 after picking up a cruciate ligament injury, ruling him out beyond the end of his loan period.[13]

On 20 August 2015, after recovering from his cruciate ligament injury, Watson re-joined League Two side Northampton Town on loan until 3 January.
