Runnymede College is a co-educational private school located in La Moraleja, Alcobendas, Community of Madrid, Spain.[1] It is the oldest British independent school in Spain. It was founded in 1967 by Mr. Arthur Powell CBE.
It is a private non-denominational British school offering a British education to boys and girls of all nationalities from the age of three to eighteen. It is inspected periodically by British Inspectors whose Report to the British Council and the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture is the basis of the authorisation given to the School.
The education offered follows the British National Curriculum. This facilitates the transfer of British educated children to and from other British schools whether in the UK or abroad.
The School adapts its curriculum to the circumstances of a British school in Spain. Latin is taught (and Greek if enough pupils show interest) as well as two modern foreign languages – French and Spanish.
Pupils take the End of Key Stage Tests, at the end of Years 6 and 9, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education at the end of Year 11 (at the age of 16), and the Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced Level Examinations of the GCE at the end of Years 12 and 13 at the ages of 17 and 18.
History
Runnymede College was founded as a private senior school in 1967, to provide a British education for English-speaking students of all nationalities who were resident in Madrid. In 1987 the primary school was inaugurated.[2] Since 1990 the whole School has been in La Moraleja, a residential neighbourhood belonging to Alcobendas town, some 13 kilometres to the north of Madrid. In 1998 the school moved to its current location.[2]
Ethos
Runnymede aims to gives its pupils an academically-oriented, all-round, liberal, humanist education. It has no formal political or religious affiliation – but seeks to encourage respect for individuals of both sexes and of all races, religions and political beliefs; promoting this as a philosophy in itself, a moral code and a rule of conduct. Teachers are encouraged to stimulate thinking and discussion about any subject, bearing in mind the sensitivity of youth.
Student body
As of 2010 there were 750 students, with about 50% being from Spanish families and 20% being from British families; there were 37 nationalities in the student body. Warwick Mansell of The Telegraph wrote that Runnymeade was "medium-sized" in terms of its student body.[2]
