Rudolf Henke (born 5 June 1954) is a physician who has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2009.[1]
Born in Düren,[1] he completed his Abitur at the Stiftisches Gymnasium in Düren[1] before studying medicine at RWTH Aachen University between 1972 and 1979.[1] The following year, he became assistant physician at St Antonius Hospital in Eschweiler,[2] rising to became a consultant in hematology and oncology in September 1988.[1] He has been on the board of directors of the physicians' trade union Marburger Bund since 1989, becoming chair in 2007.[3] He is a German delegate to the World Medical Association.[1]
He joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in 1992[2] and was elected to the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia (state parliament) in 1995.[2] He remained a member of the parliament until 2009,[1] having been twice re-elected,[2] holding positions on the Ausschuss für Arbeit, Gesundheit und Soziales (Work, Health and Social committee) and the Ausschuss für Innovation, Wissenschaft, Forschung und Technologie (Innovation, Science, Research and Technology committee).[1] Between 2005 and 2009, he was deputy leader of the parliament's CDU-group.[1]
Henke was directly elected to the Bundestag in the Aachen I constituency in 2009,[4] receiving more votes than incumbent federal health minister Ulla Schmidt in the process.[4] He has been a member of the health committee since his election, becoming deputy leader in 2014.[1] Henke was re-elected in 2013.[5]
Henke is married with four children, and lives in Burtscheid, Aachen.[1] He was deputy chair of the CDU in the city between 1999 and 2013.[1]
