Roemer van Toorn
Roemer van Toorn is a Dutch architectural theorist, professor, writer, lecturer and photographer. Currently he is Professor Architectural Theory at the Umeå School of Architecture (UMA), in Umeå, Sweden.[1]
Academic career
After graduating from the Delft University of Technology, in Delft, the Netherlands, he published 'The Invisible in Architecture' in 1994,[2] in collaboration with Ole Bouman.
From 1993-2010 he was head of publications, as well as the History & Theory program at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He developed, with Dean Wiel Arets, the PhD program of the Institute. He was a faculty member, researcher and educator at the Delft University of Technology. He has been the editor of several issues of the annual publication 'Architecture in the Netherlands', as well as an advisor and editor to the magazines: Volume, HUNCH, Domus, and Abitare. As author and photographer he also contributes to many other publications. Besides curating exhibitions and editing publications and his writing on contemporary architecture, he continues to develop his photography, focusing on 'the city'. His photography has been exhibited in Winnipeg, Los Angeles and was part of the exhibition 'Cities on the Move', curated by Hou Hanru and Hans-Ulrich Obrist. In October 2004 a selection of his photos were on display at Archilab, and at the 2006 Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. Currently he is working on a publication of articles entitled 'From Fresh Conservatism to Radical Democracy: Aesthetics as Form of Politics'. Forthcoming is his English photobook the 'Society of The And', including contributions by Stefano Boeri, and Bart Lootsma.[3]
