Rod J. Rohrich, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a plastic surgeon and Distinguished Professor that has been recognized internationally for his contributions in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, education, and his work in rhinoplasty, facial aesthetics, and aging.[1][2][3]

Dr. Rohrich currently serves as Distinguished Professor of the Department of Plastic Surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (UTSW), is the holder of the Crystal Charity Ball Distinguished Chair in Plastic Surgery, holder of the Betty and Warren Woodward Chair in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and recipient of the Rod J. Rohrich, M.D. Distinguished Professorship in Wound Healing and Plastic Surgery. He also serves as the Editor in Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery,[4] the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.[2]

Dr. Rohrich, is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.[1][2]

Early Life and Education

Dr. Rohrich was raised on a ranch in rural [Zeeland, [North Dakota]] and completed his undergraduate and postgraduate education with highest honors at North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota.[5]

Dr. Rohrich went on to receive his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, graduating with high honors.[3][6] After general surgery and plastic surgery residencies at The University of Michigan Medical Center, he did further training in pediatric plastic surgery at Oxford University in England. Dr. Rohrich completed a hand and microvascular fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He joined the Division of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in 1986.[1]

After accepting an appointment in Plastic Surgery at the UTSW College of Medicine in 1986, Dr. Rohrich succeeded Dr. Fritz E. Barton, as Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center from 1991 to 2014.[1]

The academic work of Rohrich has included significant work in many areas of both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Publications from Rohrich and associates have included landmark papers in facial fracture repair, nasal anatomy and concepts of rhinoplasty, body contouring surgery and liposuction, injectable fillers, patient safety initiatives, medical education, and breast surgery.

Dr. Rohrich has chaired over 100 national and international symposia and delivered over 900 scientific presentations on all aspects of plastic surgery. In 2005, Rohrich was appointed editor-in-chief of the flagship journal, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Rohrich is author or coauthor of over 300 medline-indexed publications, 30 textbook chapters in plastic surgery, and editor of 4 Plastic Surgery textbooks/monographs.[1][3][7]

Contributions to Plastic Surgery

In addition to his chairmanship with the Department of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dr. Rohrich is very actively involved in various organizations that promote, regulate and advance plastic surgery and resident education. He has served as the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Association of Academic Chairman of Plastic Surgery, as Director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and as section chairman within the American Medical Association. Dr. Rohrich has jointly held chairmanship of the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium since 1987 and is currently the sole chairman. He has been a member of many of the committees for the American Board of Plastic Surgery including the Ethics Committee, Oral Exam Committee, Executive Committee and has also served as the director.

Dr. Rohrich as an Author and Editor

Dr. Rohrich has authored numerous articles and textbooks on plastic surgery. He is editor in chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which stands as the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Additionally, Dr. Rohrich has published more than 600 peer reviewed articles and has authored over 50 chapters in various plastic surgery textbooks. He is also the co-author of "Navigate Your Beauty: Smart and Safe Plastic Surgery Solutions", patient oriented guide for seeking plastic surgery.
