Rock Spring, Georgia

Rock Spring is a small unincorporated census county division[1][2] located in northwest Georgia about 14 miles (23 km) south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is in Walker County which resides in Georgia's 9th congressional district. Rock Spring is included in the Chattanooga, TN-GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The area

The nearest major city is Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the nearest incorporated cities are Chickamauga, Georgia and LaFayette, Georgia, just a few minutes away. From Rock Spring it takes roughly twenty minutes to drive in to the Chattanooga city limits, and about thirty-five minutes for downtown Chattanooga. Nissin Brake Georgia , a major casting, machining and assembly facility established in 2002, is the largest employer in Rock Spring. There is also a Georgia Department of Driver Services branch in the community. Rock Spring Elementary School, Saddle Ridge Elementary, and Saddle Ridge Middle School serves the community as part of the Walker County School District.

Area history

Northwest Georgia has a significant history tied to the Civil War. The Battle of Chickamauga was fought in the Chickamauga, GA area, and was one of the major battles of the war. There is now a National Military Park (Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park) spanning 9000

acres in Chickamauga. People can find information about the battle of Chickamauga and Chattanooga, view the beautiful landscape, visit the park museum, bike through the landscape, go horseback riding, and do many other activities in the park.

the park museum holds a gun collection spanning the entire history of america. few will equal it.also a free 30 min. movie covers the chickamauga battle. there is a bookstore with civil war material, a large offering.

the park is full of well marked walking trails crisscrossing the entire 9000 acres. plaques abound explaining the events of the battle, and monuments to those who fought there. also wilders tower allows a birds eye view of that area. a great place for walking, jogging, biking or trail use. there is a large recreation area. there are water features and creeks also.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 6,548 people, 2,243 households, and 1,742 families residing in the CCD. There were 2,485 total housing units. The racial makeup of the city was 91.4% White, 6.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.

Out of a total of 2,243 households, there were 1,742 family households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% were non-families. 19.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 30.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the CCD the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 15 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39.2 years. For every 100 females there were 111.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.3 males.[2]
