Biography
Career
Born in Highland Park, Illinois, Robbie's passion for music was influenced at an early age by musicals and Disney films, however he did not begin playing guitar until his junior year of high school. While attending Indiana University, Robbie auditioned for Hanson's opening act contest during their "Live and Electric" tour, and was chosen to open for the band on November 14, 2005. In regards to opening for Hanson Robbie stated,
“ | I knew Hanson from growing up and enjoyed their acoustic stuff, and loved the harmonies, so I figured this was a band who's audience would probably like my music, because it is very similar in the sense of acoustic based and led by vocals, and I am around their age so I have grown up with probably many of the same influences.[2] | ” |
In addition to Hanson, Robbie also opened for Pat McGee Band in 2005.
Upon graduating from Indiana University in May 2008 Robbie began playing local show's in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, and recorded material at Chicago-based JBTV. Throughout 2009, Robbie continued to perform at local venues, opened for Chicago blues veteran Paris Delane,[3] and was featured in a documentary.[4]
After performing numerous shows with good friends actor/musician Kevin Clark and Blake Dermer, Robbie began to consider starting his own band. The Robbie Gold Band was formed in early 2009 with Kevin Clark (percussion), Matt Cushing (bass), and former members Blake Dermer (guitar) and Jenna Lee (vocals).[1] The band's first performance, promoted as Robbie Gold & Friends, was held on March 28, 2009 at La Costa Theatre in Chicago, IL.[5] Throughout 2009 the band performed in the Chicago metropolitan area, and at the Verizon Wireless Music Center VIP Lounge prior to the Dave Matthews Band concert in Indianapolis on August 1, 2009.[6] Robbie auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol at the United Center in Chicago, IL on June 22, 2009, however he did not make it through the regional auditions. This experience reaffirmed Robbie's passion for performing live sets, which have become a staple on the Chicago bar scene; as stated in a 2013 Chicago Tribune article,
“ | I sang for literally three seconds before they said, 'next! I looked around me and did not see career musicians who did this full-time and played multiple gigs a week. It re-established why I wanted to simply play live. At the end of their careers, a lot of bands go back to playing small venues because of the intimacy. I get such a rush from playing these small places; it's personal and people really connect with you. Overall, I'm not trying to make it big. Five years from now, I'd like to find myself on tour, get some songs listened and just be able to put some money away.[7] | ” |
Throughout 2010, Robbie continued to perform in Chicago, including Wrigleyville and House of Blues,[8] and again at the Verizon Wireless Music Center VIP Lounge prior to the Nickelback concert on May 22, 2010. In September 2010, Robbie began recording his debut album IMPACT at The IV Lab Inc. in Chicago under the production of Oscar Salinas Castañeda, which was released on January 1, 2011. The five track EP features Andrew Langer, former lead guitarist for The Redwalls, and keyboardist Eric Stang from Million Dollar Quartet. The album's lead single "Overcomplicate" was released via internet on December 23, 2010. The official music video for "How It Goes," filmed entirely in Robbie's Wrigleyville apartment, was released in June 2011.[9]
In 2012, Robbie became the official Chicago Cubs pre-game entertainment, performing live at Wrigley Field's Captain Morgan Club. On May 31, 2012 Robbie performed with Jamie Lono from NBC's The Voice and in front of 30,000 fans at Arlington Park on July 4, 2012. In addition to performing live, Robbie began recording his debut full length studio album with producer Oscar Salinas Castañeda. IMPACT was released on September 16, 2012. In 2013, Robbie performed with internet celebrity AJ Rafael[10] and was featured on a broadcast of Chicago-based Windy City LIVE singing backup vocals for his friend and Windy City LIVE host Ryan Chiaverini. Robbie also re-teamed with The IV Lab Inc. & producer Rollin Weary in June for his third album release titled, Stalling, which was released on December 1, 2013. On December 10, 2013 Robbie was featured on an episode of Comcast's Chicago-based TV show, Social Chicago.
Throughout 2014 and 2015, Robbie continued touring in the United States performing for The Mancow Morning Show, Louisiana Downs, Windy City LIVE and at Wrigley Field prior to the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game. 2016 will mark another year of touring with bassist Matt Cushing, performing throughout the Chicago-land area and the legendary Viper Room in Los Angeles.
