The Register Forum is the official student-run newspaper of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1891 at the C.M.T.S. Register, it is the oldest continually-published student-run newspaper in the country. It publishes 10 editions per year at the end of each month, September to June. Those editions range from 8 to 20 pages, and focus on events around the school. The paper is printed at The Harvard Crimson press.

Early History

The Register Forum was created by a merger of Cambridge's two high schools in 1977, though it traces its lineage back to 1891, when the C.M.T.S. Register—the newspaper of what would become the Rindge Technical School—was founded. Then, that paper was renamed the Rindge Register and was a bi-monthly journal in tabloid format of happenings at that school.

Before Cambridge High & Latin (CHLS) was merged with Rindge Technical, CHLS also published a student-staffed, well-illustrated, regularly-issued, bound, periodic journal containing essays, relevant news, interviews and coverage of theatrical events, informational articles, a gossip column called Spotlight, CHLS sports activity results, and other news of interest to the student body.

Organization

The Register Forum consists of an editorial board, a collection of staff contributors.

Editorial Board

The Register Forum Editorial Board includes all editors, as well as the Editor in Chief. Editors are chosen from the newspaper club, and hold their position for a year.

Contributors

All writers published in each edition of the Register Forum, typically 25-30 students, are listed as Register Forum Contributors.

Newspaper Club

The CRLS Newspaper Club meets weekly, and includes editors and contributors. Club members are responsible for providing content, editing other pieces, and laying out the paper. Members of the club who are not part of the editorial board are credited as Register Forum contributors.

Common sections

Usually, the Forum is composed of Around School pages, focusing on events happening around the school, Opinion and Editorial pages, Nation or World pages, which focus on current events, Arts and Entertainment pages, and Sports pages.[3] The Forum infrequently recognizes an Athlete and Artist of the Month, who are nominated by other members of the student body. Other features include "CRLS Responds", in which students are asked about pressing issues at CRLS, and "Teacher Spotlight", in which the RF sits down with a teacher or administrator to learn more about them. Articles in the Forum cover a variety of topics, ranging from school policies to current events and politics. "Tony's Tips", a popular advice column run by former editor Andres Bullon-Puckett, was discontinued at the end of the 2013-14 school year, but rumors of its return continue to circulate. The front, back, and two middle pages are in color. Beginning with the 2011-12 school year, all editions are available online in PDF format.[4]
