Red Horse Beer Muziklaban (also known as Red Horse Beer Pambansang Muziklaban from 2010 onwards) is an annual rock band competition in the Philippines since 1999 as Red Hot Muziklaban. It features young unsigned bands who compete for the grand prize of Php 1,000,000 and a recording contract. It is sponsored by the San Miguel Brewery to promote its Red Horse Beer.

It is a nationwide rock band search that holds regional elimination rounds from as far as Cebu and Davao, and then finally culminates in a grand final in Manila.

The success of the Muziklaban has led to the creation of rival rock contests.

About

Red Horse Beer Muziklaban or Red Horse Beer Pambansang Muziklaban is an annual event to showcase the local rock scene with its premier band competition. The competition is about the bands’ talent and ability of to come up with original compositions that were not only catchy, but unique- if not groundbreaking- at the time. It had always been a welcome event for everybody, and found itself hosting the stages for a multitude of artists and genres.

History

The Red Horse Beer Muziklaban started off in 1999 as a tie-up between two entities: Magic 89.9’s Tunog Kalye Series (a radio program dedicated to showcasing local talents in the Philippine Band scene) and Red Horse Beer, the popular beer brand which has somewhat become the drink-of-choice for budding musicians, especially those in rock bands. Though the competition mainly revolved around bands from Manila and neighboring provinces, a seed was already planted. Being a play on the phrase “pasiklaban sa musika,” it was clear that the competition was already mainly about two things: talent and the ability of musicians to come up with original compositions that were not only catchy, but unique- if not groundbreaking- at the time. The competition was a welcome event for everybody, and found itself hosting the stages for a multitude of artists and genres.

The following year, due to the success of the previous year’s competition, Red Horse Beer decided it would move on and keep an open eye towards more talents and would-be next-big-things. As Muziklaban became the exclusive property of Red Horse Beer, it meant that the company would be able to cater to a more specific audience. And in a short span of time later, Red Horse Beer Muziklaban zoned-in on the fledgling local rock scene and became not only the premier band competition exclusively meant for the rock crowd, but it also in itself, was THE event to watch out for annually. More people trooped to the preliminary rounds of the competition, more bands joined, and as the grand finals drew nearer, the event went out of the bars and into stadium-sized productions. By 2003, it was dubbed as a “rock challenge,” which gave the local rock scene (which was still trying to break commercially) a valuable ally in the quest of establishing itself as a formidable genre in the market.

And Muziklaban just exploded from then on… and all over.

With a consistently growing number of participating provinces every year, it was easy to tell that The Red Horse Beer Muziklaban was reaching farther and farther to the corners of the country. As many budding groups and young musicians bravely signed up for some action, even the audiences and the crowds were given a piece of the action, as the competition went full-on in 2004 with a full Tri-Media support and even an SMS component. From the eliminations – where guest bands under the Red Horse Beer Roster were kind enough to fly from city to city to play good music and music personalities/judges were flown in to help in choosing the best of the best – to the grand finals, which, by this time, was an annual event that rockers look forward to not unlike the NU 107 Rock Awards, and, of course, The PULP Summer Slam. And it was during 2004 when Mayonnaise took home the title and bested bands from all over the country. And with the success of both the year’s event and the [still-ongoing] success of Mayonnaise, it transformed the following year of Muziklaban easily as a gig definitely for the books as attendance records were broken, and in turn, the trend was set amongst leading companies… corporate or not. Everybody wanted a piece of the rock scene because of Muziklaban, and though many attempted to try and duplicate the success of the popular beer brand’s annual amateur band competition, no one could match the intensity of the shows and provide the most excellent music from an impressive roster of artists. Rock and roll, indeed, had a new home, and was alive once more.
