Ray's Candy Store is a New York City deli that has existed in the East Village[1] since 1974.

Overview

It is operated by Ray Alvarez and serves an eclectic mix of foods, including soft serve egg creams, ice cream, Belgian fries, and Obama coffee.[2]

Alvarez was born on January 25, 1933 and moved to New York in 1964, where he worked for another decade as a dishwasher in New York until he paid $30,000 for the candy store in 1974.

During the 2008 election, Ray added the name Obama to many of the items served there without changing the nature of the items (e.g. Obama Burger).

In early 2010, Ray's Candy Store has once again been having problems staying open, which has been the subject of much press.[3][4][5]
