Jordan Cardy (born 21 February 1996), known as his stage name Rat Boy, is a British musician from Chelmsford, Essex.

Early life

Cardy left school and worked in a Wetherspoons in Chelmsford. While working behind the kitchen in Wetherspoons he would write lyrics about the different people he saw.[1]

Career

After many unsuccessful attempts at bringing together a band, Cardy produced "The Mixtape", a 5 track mix with Rat Boy on the vocals, keyboard and bass. He sent "The Mixtape" to various record companies and in response Drew McConnell (Backing vocals and Bass for Babyshambles) paid for Rat Boy to go to meeting with him. In addition to this "The Mixtape" was featured in NME Magazine and played by radio channels including BBC Radio 1, XFM and BBC Radio 6.[2]

Rat Boy was added to the BBC Sound Of 2016 Longlist, an annual poll where over 100 'Music Specialists' choose which artists they believe will be successful within the next 12 months.[3] In December 2015, MTV released its Brand New for 2016, and annually released article containing artists to watch out for during the upcoming year. Rat Boy was shortlisted on this along with around 10 other artists including Bonkaz, Jack Garratt and Rationale. He was also nominated for the Best New Artist 2016 by NME magazine[4]

Musical style

Rat Boy’s music is a mixture of lots of different styles such as hip-hop and indie. He has to have taken inspiration for his music from other notable bands and artists such as Jamie T, Blur and the Streets. Many of Rat Boy's songs consist of narratives and stories within the lyrics and this is said to be favoured by the artist.[5]

Rat Boy is a confirmed act for NME's Awards Tour 2016, an eleven-date UK tour in February 2016.[10] It was confirmed on 4 December that Rat Boy will be playing at Reading and Leeds festival 2016.
