Justice Ranjan Gogoi (Assamese: ৰঞ্জন গগৈ; b. 18 November 1954)[1] is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is in line to become the Chief Justice of India in October 2018, succeeding Justice Dipak Misra, as the seniormost judge of the Court. He will be the first judge from India's North East to hold that post.[2]
Career
Justice Gogoi was enrolled at the Bar in 1978 and practised at the Gauhati High Court of which he was made a Permanent Judge on 28 February 2001. He was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 9 September 2010 and became its Chief Justice on 12 February 2011. He was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court on 23 April 2012 and will have a tenure of over seven years there.[3][4] His father Keshab Chandra Gogoi was a former Chief Minister of Assam.[5]
