Ranbir Singh Pura is a district and sub-district notified area committee in Jammu district in the Indian state called Jammu and Kashmir.
Geography
Named after Dogra Maharaja Ranbir Singh,[1] Ranbir Singh Pora is located at 32°38′N 74°44′E / 32.63°N 74.73°E.[2] It has an average elevation of 270 metres (886 feet above sea level).
Ranbir Singh Pura is one of the most progressive tehsils of Jammu District.
Economy
The main economic activities of Ranbir Singh Pura are agriculture and dairy farming. Rice (basmati) and wheat are major crops, and beseem and vegetables are also grown. The Rakh area of Badyal Brahmana and Arnia are very famous for vegetable farming. Ranbir Singh Pura has many rice mills for the processing of high-quality basmati rice.
The main tourist destination is Grahana Wetland, where migratory birds from temperate zones of Asia come to enjoy the beautiful landscape. The main town is self-sufficient, containing department stores, garment showrooms, sweets and confectionery, and a fresh fruit and vegetable open market. Apart from these, healthcare services, a post office, nationalized banks (JKB, SBI, PNB, PSB), and private sector bank HDFC are also present. State Bank of Patiala, another nationalized Bank has opened its branch in 2013.
Education
The major educational institutions of Ranbir Singh Pura are SKUAS-Veterinary College, Govt. Degree College, and Govt. Higher Sec School. The city also possesses many centers of primary and secondary education.
Language
Ranbir Singh Pora's offical language is Urdu, and secondary spoken languages include Dogri and Punjabi.
Demographics
At the time of the 2001 India census,[3] Ranbir Singh Pura had a population of 13,563. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Ranbir Singh Pura has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 63%. In Ranbir Singh Pura, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Famous People
- S. Darshan Singh, district vice president of Jammu and Kashmir national conference.
- Er. Rajinder Singh Chib, who qualified B.E. (Electronics) from BITS, Pilani (Rajasthan) and did post graduate work in industrial management from IISC, Bangalore. He was Commissioned in the Indian Air Force in 1963 as an Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) and served for 20 years in various capacities.
- Naib Subedar Bana Singh P.V.C., who was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest wartime gallantry medal in India. His designations include Asst. Director, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India; Secretary, Defence Services Officers Institute, New Delhi. He was awarded VISHISHT SEVA MEDAL by the President of India. was inducted as a Cabinet Minister in J&K Government in 1986 and worked in different portfolios including Forest, Tourism, and Health & Medical Education.
- Sqn. Ldr. Balwan Singh Chib - After being uprooted from Batala (Sathar), Teh. Bhimbar, Dist. Mirpur, studied at King George's Military School, Belgaum and joined Indian Air Force. He is a qualified A.M.Ae.S.I (Aeronautical Engineer).
- The best known political figure from R S Pura was Bhagat Chhajju Ram, often called the Gandhi of J&K state. He was cabinet minister for approximately 40 years and represented R S Pura constituency for four times, a record unparalleled in the district. He also remained president of J&K PC; the only non-Muslim and Dalit (Panchama) leader to do this. He was also elected to Praja Sabha of Maharaja Hari Singh.
Transport
The town once had a train station on the Jammu-Sialkot Line. Currently, bus services are available for reaching to Jammu City.
