Ralf Åkesson (born 8 February 1961,[1] Oxelösund, Sweden) is a Swedish chess grandmaster.

Åkesson was awarded by FIDE the International Master title in 1981 and the grandmaster title in 1995.

In 1980/1981 he won the European Junior Chess Championship (U20) in Groningen.[2] In 1985 and 1999 he won the Swedish Chess Championship.[3] In April 2001 he won the Grandmaster Group in Gausdal. In December 2003 he won the Rilton Cup in Stockholm. In April 2005 he won the GM B Group of the Gausdal Classics tournament.[4] In June 2005 he won the Open of the Marx György Memorial in Paks.[5] Åkesson won the 2015 Malmö Open, which consisted in four rounds of rapid chess and three of standard chess, with a score of 6.5/7.[6]

He took part in three Chess Olympiads for the Swedish national team (1996, 1998 and 2000) with altogether 15 points in 28 games (+9, =12, −7).[7] He achieved his highest rating, 2535, in July 1999.[8]

In Sweden he plays for the club Västerås SK[9] and for the club Södra SS, in Belgium for Leuven Centraal.[10]
