Rage Against the Machine have released four studio albums, one compilation album, three video albums, seventeen singles, thirteen music videos, and one demo. The band was formed in 1991 by Zack de la Rocha (vocals), Tom Morello (guitar), Tim Commerford (bass) and Brad Wilk (drums). The band is noted both for its blend of hip hop, heavy metal, punk, and funk, and its revolutionary politics and lyrics.[1] Rage Against the Machine have released four full-length studio albums, one of which is a cover album. From these works, 17 singles have been released, with 13 accompanying music videos. They have also released three video albums and two live albums. All of their studio albums have been RIAA certificated as Platinum, of which two were Billboard number ones.
They released their debut album, Rage Against the Machine, in 1992; although not immediately successful, it did reach first position in the Top Heatseekers chart, and eventually reached #45 in the Billboard 200. Their next major release was Evil Empire, which entered the Billboard 200 at number one in 1996. In 1999, the third studio album, The Battle of Los Angeles, also debuted in top spot in the Billboard 200; it sold 430,000 copies in its first week.[2] The band, however, split in October 2000 after vocalist de la Rocha cited problems with the band having compromised their "artistic and political ideal[s]".[3] Their final studio album was a cover album entitled Renegades, released shortly after the band's dissolution. The Battle of Mexico City, a video album composed of a recording of a 1999 live performance in Mexico City, was released in 2001. In response to the 9/11 attacks all of Rage Against the Machine's songs were put on Clear Channels List of Post-9/11 banned songs. In 2003, a live album titled Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium was released. It was an edited recording of the band's final two concerts on September 12 and 13, 2000 at the Grand Olympic Auditorium. After a seven-year hiatus, the band reunited in January 2007 and performed at the Coachella Festival in April 2007. Rage Against the Machine has performed at several music festivals and other live venues since then, but currently have no plans to record new material.[4]
The band achieved their first ever #1 single in December 2009 as a Christmas number one single in the UK courtesy of a Facebook campaign against The X Factor.
