"Promise", better known in the west as "Geddan" or "Get Down", is the eleventh single by Japanese recording artist Kohmi Hirose. It was released on November 27, 1997, as the second single from Hirose's seventh studio album, Rhapsody (1998). The title track and B-side, "Chocolate," were both written and composed by Hirose. "Promise" was used in commercials for Alpen's 1998 winter campaign.

Chart performance

"Promise" debuted at number 14 on the Oricon Weekly Singles chart with 31,920 copies sold in its first week.[1] It climbed one spot to number 13 in its second week, selling 34,470 copies, and again to number 12 on its third week, selling 41,700 copies.[2][3] "Promise" peaked at number 4 on its fourth week, with 68,910 copies sold.[4] It spent the following seven weeks within the top thirty, selling 324,790 copies.[5][6][7][8][9][10] The single charted for a total of sixteen weeks and has sold 542,290 copies in total, becoming Hirose's second best-selling single, behind "Romance no Kamisama."[11][12]

In other media

The song was popularized on the Internet through its use in the "Get Down" (ゲッダン Geddan) meme on Nico Nico Douga and then YouTube, which originally involved cartridge tilting game play footage from the Nintendo 64 game GoldenEye 007 set to the song.[13] Hirose, too, has referred to her own song as "Geddan" following the renewed popularity in the use of the meme.[14] In 2011, Victor Entertainment used its copyright on the song to have the audio removed from these "Get Down" videos. For unknown reasons the audio was later added back to some videos.
