2005 | 1 | "The Dominion of War: Empire and Liberty in North America 1500-2000" | Fred Anderson, Andrew Cayton | Jan 12, 2005
Americans often think of their nation's history as a movement toward ever-greater democracy, equality, and freedom. Wars in this story are understood both as necessary to defend those values and as exceptions to the rule of peaceful progress. In The Dominion of War, historians Fred Anderson and Andrew Cayton boldly reinterpret the development of the United States, arguing instead that war has played a leading role in shaping North America from the sixteenth century to the present.[4]

From Hannibal's elephants to Patton's passenger pigeons, animals have been an important component of military operations. Today, many animals both on land and at sea are integral to research and combat operations for our armed forces. 2005 | 4 | "Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan and Bin Laden from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001" | Steve Coll | Jan 27, 2005
Steve Coll's Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001 offers revealing details of the CIA's involvement in the evolution of the Taliban and Al Qaeda in the years before the September 11 attacks. From the beginning, Coll shows how the CIA's on-again, off-again engagement with Afghanistan after the end of the Soviet war left officials at Langley with inadequate resources and intelligence to appreciate the emerging power of the Taliban. He also demonstrates how Afghanistan became a deadly playing field for international politics where Soviet, Pakistani, and U.S. agents armed and trained a succession of warring factions.[4]
2005 | 5 | "Vietnam Chronicles: The Abrams Tapes, 1968-1972" | Lewis Sorley | Feb 2, 2005
During the four years General Creighton W. Abrams was commander in Vietnam, he and his staff made more than 455 tape recordings of briefings and meetings. In 1994, with government approval, Lewis Sorley began transcribing and analyzing the tapes. Sorley's laborious, time-consuming effort has produced a picture of the senior U.S. commander in Vietnam and his associates working to prosecute a complex and challenging military campaign in an equally complex and difficult political context.[4]

In the summer of 1932, 45,000 veterans of World War I marched peacefully on Washington, D.C. -- their two month rally to demand immediate early payment of a cash bonus promised to them in 1924 for their military service.[4]
2005 | 8 | "Hero Mama: A Daughter Remembers the Father She Lost in Vietnam - and the Mother who Held Her Family Together" | Karen Spears Zacharias | Mar 1, 2005
In December 1965, David Spears said good-bye to his wife and three children and went to fight in Vietnam; he returned "in a cargo plane full of caskets" in July 1966. His family has never been the same. "He was the center of what made me feel safe," Zacharias, then in third grade, explains.[4]
2005 | 9 | "Rescued from the Reich: How One of Hitler's Soldiers Saved the Lubavitcher Rebbe" | Bryan Mark Rigg | Mar 9, 2005
The last decade has seen many books recounting the actions of German Christians who helped Jews survive the Holocaust.[4]
2005 | 10 | "The Iraq War: A Military History" | Dr. Williamson Murray | Mar 16, 2005
The practice of "embedding" journalists in combat units provided a good deal of spectacular, timely footage, but tended to restrict insight to the frontline perspective of riflemen and vehicle crews. Murray and Scales provide a lucid and leavened look at the larger-scale forces shaping the war. Murray (A War to Be Won), currently a fellow at the Institute of Defense Analysis, is an eminent military historian, and Scales (Yellow Smoke), a retired major general and former commandant of the Army War College, is a familiar commentator on security issues. In this operational history, they eschew discussion of such abstractions as whether the war was a "revolution in military affairs."[4]

While American troops are serving overseas, their families at home deal with both the anxiety of loved ones in combat as well as the day-to-day challenges of getting along without fathers or mothers, husbands or wives, and brothers or sisters. John Callaway talks with some of the families whose loved ones have been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.[4]
2005 | 12 | "Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda" | Sean Naylor | Apr 12, 2005
After the Al Qaeda attacks of September 11, 2001, America quickly toppled the Taliban regime that had sheltered the terrorist organization in Afghanistan. But, believing the war to be all but over, the Pengtagon and U.S. Central Command refused to commit the forces required to achieve total victory in Afghanistan. Instead, they delegated responsibility for fighting the war's biggest battle-one that could have broken Al Qaeda and captured Osama bin Laden-to a hodge-podge of units thrown together at the last moment.[4]
2005 | 13 | "D-Days in the Pacific" | Donald L. Miller | Apr 14, 2005
Although most people associate the term D-Day with the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, it is military code for the beginning of any offensive operation. In the Pacific theater during World War II there were more than one hundred D-Days. The largest -- and last -- was the invasion of Okinawa on April 1, 1945, which brought together the biggest invasion fleet ever assembled, far larger than that engaged in the Normandy invasion.[4]

One of the leading historians of WWI offers this superior one-volume version of his massive projected three-volume work, the first volume of which, To Arms, clocked in at 1250-plus pages last year.[4]

The Army and the Army Reserves missed their March 2005 recruiting goals, as they had in February of that year for the first time since May 2000. While the Navy and Marines successfully met their goals, the role of all recruiters became more challenging in the face of the American presence in Afghanistan and Iraq.[4]
2005 | 16 | "Blitzkrieg to Desert Storm: The Evolution of Operational Warfare" | Robert M. Citino | May 5, 2005
When Germany launched its blitzkrieg invasion of France in 1940, it forever changed the way the world waged war. Although the Wehrmacht ultimately succumbed to superior Allied firepower in a two-front war, its stunning operational achievement left a lasting impression on military commanders throughout the world, even if their own operations were rarely executed as effectively.[4]
2005 | 17 | "Winston Churchill's: The Dream" | Richard M. Langworth | May 11, 2005

The invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq focused attention on veterans and the help they get—or don't get—when they come home. In Illinois, the Chicago Sun-Times was at the forefront with in-depth coverage of the challenges facing veterans and their families. John Callaway and his panel explored the impact of the Sun-Times' "Wounded Warriors" series on the Department of Veterans Affairs and policy makers.[4]
2005 | 21 | "Acts of Faith: A Novel" | Philip Caputo | Jun 10, 2005
Thirty years ago, Pulitzer Prize winning author and journalist Philip Caputo crossed the deserts of Sudan and Eritrea on foot and camel back, a journey that inspired his first novel, Horn of Africa, and awakened a lifelong fascination with Africa. His travels have since taken him back to Sudan, as well as to Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania, and from those experiences he has fashioned Acts of Faith, his most ambitious novel. A stunning and timely epic, it tells the stories of pilots, aid workers, missionaries, and renegades struggling to relieve the misery wrought by the civil war in Sudan.[4]

On March 2, 2005 Rep. Martin Meehan of Massachusetts introduced legislation adopting a policy of nondiscrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.[4]
2005 | 24 | "Front & Center with John Callaway: Women in the U.S. Military: A Changing Role?" | Colonel Jill Morgenthaler, U.S. Army, Captain Kathryn M. Hobbs, USN, Capt. Angela Bowman, U.S. Army National Guard | Jul 25, 2005
As the war in Iraq continued in 2005, death and casualty figures included increasing numbers of women. Although women were technically not assigned to combat, the lack of a front line in Iraq put female soldiers at a risk similar to their male counterparts. John Callaway and his guests explored how the role of women has evolved in today's military.[4]
2005 | 25 | "Front & Center with John Callaway: The U.S. Military in Iraq: Who is Winning?" | David L. Grange, John J. Mearsheimer, Captain Dan Moore, USN | Sep 15, 2005
As the debate intensified over the success of the U.S. policy in Iraq, public support for maintaining a military presence in Iraq diminished in 2005. Could the U.S. effectively fight an insurgency where no front line exists? What has the United States learned from battling insurgencies in the past? And how would the strain of a national emergency at home affect our armed forces' ability to maintain operations abroad?[4]

As American and coalition troops fight the first battles of this new century -- from Afghanistan to Yemen to the Philippines to Iraq -- they do so in ways never before seen. When the major powers sent troops to the Korean peninsula in June of 1950, it supposedly marked the start of one of the last century's bloodiest conflicts. The most hard-fought campaign since the invasion of Iraq by coalition forces in April 2003, the battle for Fallujah seems here to embody most every facet of the American military experience in that country--inordinate courage by the fighting men and their immediate superiors, indecision and contradiction by U.S. leaders from the top down, a disconnect between military will to succeed in Iraq and a lack of dollars and troops to support it, and a treacherous relationship between Fallujans and those Americans who would do everything to "help" them.[4]
2005 | 35 | "A Victor, Not A Butcher: Ulysses S. Grant's Overlooked Military Genius" | Edward H. Bonekemper | Nov 12, 2005
Civil War hero General Ulysses S. Grant has been unfairly maligned because of the bloody 1864 campaigns he conducted against Robert E. Lee to secure final victory for the Union. A Victor, Not A Butcher takes you into those decisive campaigns to prove that far from being a crude butcher (as he has been characterized not only by Southern partisans, but by historians) Grant’s casualty rates actually compared favorably with those of other Civil War generals. Grant was an inspired military leader with a genius for issuing lucid orders, maneuvering his troops adroitly, and making excellent use of his staff. His perseverance, decisiveness, moral courage, and political acumen place him among the greatest generals of the Civil War—indeed, of all military history.[4]

A journalist on the U.S. military beat has unique challenges: evaluating military briefings, developing one's own sources, and dealing with classified information. How can readers, viewers, and listeners get a good sense of what's going on in war zones when security concerns are so great that reporters often cannot get into the field to report in any meaningful way?[4]

Command called the soldiers of Second Platoon “the best trained...and worst disciplined”; they could be found in battle wearing shorts and flip-flops, but they also endured sudden swings from stultifying boredom to mortal danger. In Junger’s description, they were the soldiers who existed “on the tip of the spear” – and in WAR, he attempts to evoke the unvarnished reality of their experiences on the ground in Afghanistan, as well as the challenges they faced in their returns to civilian life.[10]
