Prince Ernst Alfons Franz Ignaz Joseph Maria Anton von Hohenberg (17 May 1904 – 5 March 1954) was the younger son of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his morganatic wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, who were assassinated at Sarajevo in 1914.
Early life
Ernst was born at his parents' estate at Konopiště in Bohemia. Following his parents' assassination, which precipitated World War I, Ernst and his siblings, Sophie and Maximilian were taken in by their uncle, Prince Jaroslav von Thun und Hohenstein.
In late 1918, their properties in Czechoslovakia, including Konopiště and Chlumec nad Cidlinou, were confiscated. The children moved to Vienna and Schloß Artstetten. In 1938, following the Anschluss the family were arrested, Ernst previously having spoken at pro-monarchist meetings and having publicly opposed Anschluss, was sent to Dachau concentration camp with his brother.[1] They were freed in 1945 when World War II ended.[1] Their Austrian properties were confiscated in 1939 but were returned in 1945.
Family
Ernst married Marie-Therese Wood (1910-1985) on 25 May 1936; the couple had two children:
- Prince Franz Ferdinand Maximilian Georg Ernst Maria Josef Zacharius Ignaz von Hohenberg (b. 14 March 1937 - d. 8 August 1978); married Heide Zechling and had issue:
- Prince Franz Ferdinand Karl Georg Ernst von Hohenberg (b. 24 May 1969); married Christiane Pirker, one son.
- Prince Maximilian von Hohenberg (b. 2001)
- Prince Franz Ferdinand Karl Georg Ernst von Hohenberg (b. 24 May 1969); married Christiane Pirker, one son.
- Prince Ernst Georg Elemer Albert Josef Antonius Peregrinus Rupertus Maria von Hohenberg (b. 1 March 1944); married 1stly on 31 August 1970 to Patricia Anette Caesar (divorced 1999) and had issue;
- Princess Eva Anne Maria von Hohenberg (b. 1 December 1974)
- He married secondly to Margareta Anna Ndisi.
Death
He died at Graz in Austria in 1954, aged 49.
