The Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU), formerly Ponce School of Medicine & Health Sciences, is a private university located in the city of Ponce in Puerto Rico. It was inaugurated in 1977. It holds nationally accredited graduate programs in the disciplines of Medicine (MD), Clinical Psychology (PsyD and PhD), Biomedical Sciences (PhD), Medical Sciences (MSMS), and Public Health (MPH and DrPH). In 2002, the institution established an academic partnership with the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute.

1977: The Ponce School Of Medicine is founded by the Pontifical Catholic University Of Puerto Rico
1980: The Ponce School Of Medicine Foundation in incorporated
1981: The school is accredited by the LCME
1988: The PH.D. in Biomedical Sciences program is launched
1995: A new campus is built
1999: The Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) program is created

About

The Ponce Health Sciences University (PSHU) is graduate-level health-sciences University founded in 1977. For over 38 years PHSU has proudly culturally competent health care professionals in medicine, public health, psychology and research.

Originally the medical school was founded in 1977 by the Catholic University of Puerto Rico. In January 1980, the medical school established itself independently as the Ponce Medical School Foundation, Inc. (PSM). PSM graduated its class of 23 students in 1981 and, year after year, has maintained its position as one of the leading medical schools in Puerto Rico. Since inception, PHSU has provided thousands of graduates with a culturally competent curriculum and the opportunity to gain practical experience by utilizing the processes and theories covered in PHSU's curriculum. Graduates of our program are well equipped to navigate the ever changing landscape of patient care and our commitment to educational excellence is the underlying value that leads the university to seek and recruit outstanding faculty and exceptional students. By combining expanded academic and professional educational offering in a cooperative and intimate learning environment, the PSHU continues to graduate highly competent healthcare professionals dedicated to their community and the expanding future needs of their profession.

In September 2014, the Ponce School Of Medicine was acquired by Arist Medical Sciences University (AMSU) to operate as Ponce Health Science University (PSHU) Unique in mission but global in its vision, AMSU is developing a global network of affiliated health sciences universities and related institutions that are driven bye a common and unrelenting commitment to superior student preparation that leads to excellent patient care and discoveries that improve the human condition.

Research/Clinical Trials

Ponce Health Sciences University's Ponce Research Institute (PRI) is dedicated to reducing health disparities by cultivating groundbreaking research that will have a global impact on health care. The modern research facilities at PRI provide a nurturing setting in which collaboration is actively sought out and encouraged. Our students, faculty, and associates share in the creation of the ideal environment for education and research:

Key Research Areas Included

PHSU's facilities and access to state of the art resources have afforded PHSU the opportunity to spearhead initiatives to better serve the community at large. In 2001, the university began partnering with pharmaceutical companies to conduct clinical trials on campus. PRI has partnered with companies to test medicines, medical devices and other forms of treatment to evaluate the effectiveness of those treatment methods. Ponce Research Institute is currently participating in over forty clinical studies aimed at bridging the gap in health care disparities to better serve the community.

PRI's research has focused primarily on Cancer, HIV/AIDS. PRI been recognized for over 15 years for its active participation in clinical research trials via its ambulatory clinical research center and for its role as joint sponsor in Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) accredited events throughout the island.

Ponce Health Sciences University Wellness Center

Adjacent to PHSU's campus is the PHSU Wellness center is an intramural multispecialty ambulatory healthcare center. The Wellness Center doubles as a center to serve patients and as a teaching site for clinical clerkships. The access to this facility has given students and local physicians the proper foundation and experience in treating and communicating with patients across Puerto Rico.

The center provides services for approximately 1,500 patients weekly with a main patient pool receiving mental health services.
