Plena Manlibro de Esperanta Gramatiko

This article is about the Esperanto grammar book. For the antiviral, see PMEG (antiviral).

The Plena Manlibro de Esperanta Gramatiko (PMEG, English: Complete Manual of Esperanto Grammar) is a book that explains the Esperanto grammar in an easily understandable way. It is written mostly by Bertilo Wennergren. It targets ordinary Esperantists that want to study the grammar, word construction, writing and pronunciation of Esperanto.

It does not use traditional grammatical terms in order to facilitate the understanding. An example is "O-vorto" (English: O-word) instead of "substantivo" (English: noun, substantive) or "rolvorteto" (English: little role word) instead of "prepozicio" (English: preposition). Those new kinds of grammatical terms are additionally more suitable to describe Esperanto than the traditional terms. For example, according to the traditional terminology, the words "tiu" (English: that one), "ambaŭ" (English: both) and "ties" (English: that one's) are adjectives, but they behave very differently to the adjectives ending in "a"; the word "A-vorto" (English: A-word) groups words that behave similarly more logically together.[1]

It is mainly a practical guide and not really a theoretical work for linguists like the Plena Analiza Gramatiko (English: Complete Analytical Grammar).

It only existed on the Internet from 1995 until 2006. Since January 2006 the printed version is also available for purchase, published by Esperanto-USA.

Only Wennergren is responsible for the contents of PMEG, but many other people helped with the process of making the book.
