Pittsford Sutherland High School is a public high school in suburban Rochester, Monroe County, Upstate New York.

The school

One of the two high schools in the town, it is located at 55 Sutherland Street (from which the school gets its name). Located in the historic village of Pittsford, Pittsford Sutherland High School has consistently been ranked as one of the top 100 high schools in the nation according to an annual listing in Newsweek. In 2008, Pittsford Sutherland was in 61st place and in 2011 was in 73rd place.

Reconstruction

In 2004, Pittsford Schools started a renovation project on all buildings in the district. Sutherland is in Phase II of this process, with the addition of a new auditorium, gymnasium, 16 new classrooms (2 of which are Physics-only rooms) and commons area. In addition, Sutherland students got a new library which was constructed in the old auditorium space. Architects retained some of the features of the old auditorium such as the high ceiling and woodwork from the old stage. The new library opened in January 2007 and the old library was then converted into a Large Group Instruction Room (L.G.I.).

Awards and recognition

Pittsford Sutherland was ranked 84th in the country (a Gold Medal School) by U.S. News & World Report in its 2010 high school rankings.[1] It had been ranked 75th the previous year.

Extracurriculars

Sutherland has a wide and diverse array of extracurricular activities open to the student body including several sports teams, Model United Nations, Political Advocates club, Math Club, Desi Club, Environmental Club, Bridge Club, Chess Club, Art Club, National Honour Society, Interact Club, Drama Club, and more, plus regionally acclaimed drama and musical theatre productions in the fall and spring, respectively. The Sutherland Jazz Ensemble often performs at the nearby Rochester International Jazz Festival. The Knightly News is composed of students who make short videos (skits and news) of the school including those of the well-known and widely loved star "Lunch Boy".

In 2006–2007, students took Advanced Placement (AP) exams in 25 of the 37 course areas administered by the College Board.[2]
