Lt Gen Philip Campose formerly served as the Vice Chief of Army Staff of Indian Army.
Early life and Education
Philip was born in Thumpamon near Pandalam in Kerala.
Lt Gen Philip completed his schooling at St. Xavier's School, Delhi. He is an alumnus of National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy at Dehradun. He is graduate of the Defence Services Staff College Wellington, the General Officer is also qualified on the Higher Command course Mhow and the National Defence College, New Delhi. His academic qualifications include Master of Philosophy degrees in Defence Management and Security Studies from Indore University in 1998 and in Security and Strategic Studies from Madras University in 2006. He has attended a tactical course in Russia
Career
The General Officer was commissioned in the 9 Gorkha Rifles in 1974 and later transferred to the Mechanised Infantry in 1982. He held several instructional appointments at National Defence Academy, Tactical Wing of the School of Armoured Warfare and Defence Services Staff College. General Officer has been a Brigade Major of an Armoured Brigade, Colonel General Staff of a Division in Counter Insurgency in the North East, Deputy Director General (Strategy) in the Directorate of Perspective Planning at Army Headquarters and Chief Staff Officer (Land Vector) at Headquarters Strategic Forces Command. He has also commanded Mechanised Infantry Battalion, an Infantry Division on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, Corps in the Western Sector in deserts. He served in UN Peace Keeping in the former Yugoslavia and Northern Iraq where he was the head of the mission. He is Colonel Commandant of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment. Before taking as Vice Chief of Army Staff he served as GOC-in-C Western Command. He retired from the service on 31 July 2015 after 40 years and seven months of distinguished service in the Indian Army. Lt Gen MMS Rai succeeded him as Vice Chief of Army Staff.
