Peter Whittle is a British politician, author and journalist, affiliated with the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP). He is UKIP's candidate for the 2016 London mayoral election.[1][2]
Whittle was born in Peckham, before studying at the University of Kent.[3] He worked in journalism, living for five years in Los Angeles,[4] before founding the New Culture Forum think-tank in 2006.[1] He became UKIP's cultural spokesperson in 2013 [2] and stood for Eltham at the 2015 general election, coming third with 15% of the vote, beating both the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party.[3]
In September 2015, Whittle was selected as the UKIP candidate for Mayor of London, as well as topping the party list for election to the Greater London Assembly.[1] Whittle is the only LGBT candidate currently selected by any of the major parties for the 2016 Mayoral election.[5]
