Peter Tripodi
Peter Tripodi (born October 11, 1985) is a Republican, Independence and Conservative Party[1] Town Councilman in Ossining, NY,[2] Westchester County. He is currently the youngest elected official in the county. Tripodi was first elected to office in 2009 at the age of 24. He had previously run unsuccessfully for the Council seat in 2008.[3] Tripodi was the first in his family to graduate from college and is currently studying at Pace University for an MPA degree in government.
Early life and education
Tripodi was born in Bronxville, New York and his family moved to Ossining when he was 2 years old. He attended St. Augustines Elementary School in Ossining, and went to high school at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers, New York where he graduated in 2003. Tripodi then attended Westchester Community College from 2003–2005 where he transferred to SUNY Albany where he studied American History from 2005–2008. While attending SUNY Albany Tripodi studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark during the Summer of 2007. While working 2 jobs, a waiter at Traveler's Rest Restaurant in Ossining, NY and a line cook at the Washington Tavern in Albany, New York, Tripodi helped pay his way through college. His last semester at SUNY Albany consisted of an internship at the New York State Assembly where he worked for Assemblyman William Reilich of Monroe County, New York. He is currently studying at Pace University to earn a Masters of Public Administration Degree in Government.
Election
Upon his graduation in May 2008 Tripodi returned to Ossining, NY and ran for the Town Board.[4] Tripodi lost the election receiving 37% of the vote. In 2009 Tripodi ran consecutively for the Town Council seat against 2 Democrat incumbents. He won with 35% of the vote and was the highest vote receiver in all elections in the Town and Village of Ossining that year.[5] Ironically both of Tripodi's opponents, Northern Wilcher and David Kriger, tied with exactly the same number of votes and because of that both lost the election. In January 2010 the Town Board appointed Northern Wilcher back to his old seat with Tripod abstaining from the vote.
Policies
Tripodi has voted against pay raises for elected officials (not taking one himself),[6] health care for elected officials,[6] and numerous new fees and permit fee increases contained in the 2011 operating budget.[7] Tripodi takes issue with a consultant earning upwards to $238,000.00 in one year on a part-time basis.
He has also been a strong advocate for more utilization of the Town's former police headquarters.
In The September issue of Westchester Magazine, he was quoted as saying that some of his actions and comments as a Councilman were justified in that, "I act this way because that’s how I was ‘raised’ on the board. It’s like growing up in the ghetto."
He recently announced his candidacy for Ossining Town Supervisor.
