Pedro Álvaro Cateriano Bellido (born 26 June 1958) is a Peruvian lawyer and politician, and current Prime Minister of Peru since 2 April 2015. He was previously the Minister of Defense from July 2012 to April 2015.
Career
Cateriano is a lawyer by profession and specialized in constitutional law.[1] From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the Peruvian parliament.[1] He served as deputy justice minister from 2001 to 2002.[1] He was named as the Organization of American States (OAS) election observer in Guatemala in 2007 and as the agent of Peru to the Inter-Human Rights (IACHR) in the Chavin case.[1] In addition, he teaches law at the University of Lima.[1]
He was appointed defense minister on 24 July 2012 to the cabinet led by Juan Jiménez.[2][3] Cateriano replaced Jose Urquizo Maggia in the post.[1]
Prime Minister
In April of 2015 President Ollanta Humala appointed Bellido as Prime Minister after his predecessor, Ana Jara was censured for spying against lawmakers, reporters, business leaders and other citizens.[4][5]
