Petar Smiljanić
Petar Smiljanić (Serbian Cyrillic: Петар Смиљанић) was a capo (head) of the Morlach troops in Venetian service during the Cretan War (1645–69), active in Venetian Dalmatia. A Serb, he was born in Udbina, in the Lika region, then moved with his family to Venetian Dalmatia in 1647.[1] Petar was instrumental in the takeover of Zemunik, Novigrad, Obrovac, Nadin and Vrana. Petar also led the attack on Gračac in Lika in 1647. Because of his important role in the conflict against the Ottomans, Petar was named leader of all hajduks in Venetian Dalmatia. He fell in battle near Ribnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1648. His son, Ilija, became governator principale of the Morlach troops.
