Pennthorpe School is a co-educational independent school in Rudgwick, West Sussex, for children aged 2 to 13. The school was founded in 1930 in Chislehurst Kent as a Christian Boarding school for boys. In 1939, at the outbreak of World War II, the school relocated to Gibbons Mill, south of the village of Rudgwick. In 1948 the school moved to its current location in a manor house, "Gaskyns" in Rudgwick itself. The school remained an all-boys school until the early 1980s, when under the Headmaster Rev. John Spencer it officially became co-educational. Pupils usually pass onto their chosen senior schools at age 13 through Common Entrance or Common Academic Scholarship exams.
School houses
There are four houses at Pennthorpe, named to reflect the places that surround the village and the school's main building. Each pupil belongs to one house, to which they are assigned when they join the school. The houses are:
- Baynards: House colour red.
- Gaskyns: House colour green.
- Pallinghurst: House colour blue.
- Tismans: House colour yellow.
Buildings
Pennthorpe's campus has a number of buildings: Gaskyns, the main house, built in 1892, the Sports Hall opened in 1987, the Clock Block - a block of ten classrooms (including the Science department) and completed in 2002 and the Pre Prep, opened in 2009, which houses the Beehive Nursery and Reception through to Year 2. Art, Design Technology and Computing are housed together as are the Music School, music technology and Performing Arts. The school has a Chapel"', dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi.
