Flying Into CYPS-Pemberton

AIRPORT INFORMATION: 400 landings/yr Late Summer the Busiest time because of it being Forest Fire Season and lots of small planes traveling around Regionally and cross continent. The BC Government's Coastal Fire Protection Unit for the Pemberton Fire Zone - the regional Fire Base for Forest Fire Fighting - is adjacent to the Airport. Heli-skiing is the biggest winter time use. For the flight enthusiasts the Pemberton Valley is a Centre of Hang Gliding, Paragliding, Gliding^, Skydiving, and Heli-tours. The Valley hosted the Canadian Paragliding Nationals in 2012. Launch site is NW of Village. The Sky can get very crowded in the Summer. Unfortunately this led to a fatal tragedy this Summer, when a powered Glider and a Cessna collided over Nairn Falls Provincial Park. 4 adults and a dog died.

The Airport allows both rotor craft and fixed wing aircraft: private planes, small jets and helicopters.

Pemberton Regional Airport Authority

Began by the Pemberton Flying Club circa 1970. Oral history states it was based on a post war "back of the envelope" design by Boeing himself. The airport land was a Federal Crown Grant to the town in 1985. The Pemberton Airport Committee underwent several more incarnations before finally being incorporated under the British Columbia Society Act, in 2007 Pemberton Regional Airport Authority or PRAA. As with all non-profit societies, all funds and/or profits must be used only for the society.

Airport Plans Past and Future

The Fed's planned to install Navigational Beacons for Scheduled Dash 7 service. It never happened. Partially because the Runway was too short, not for the Aircraft, but for their Canadian Certification, since extended, even though in Europe and the US these Canadian made planes had a certification to land on way shorter strips. They fly out of the small strips in London Docklands Airport and Downtown Brussels crowded by Buildings and Versailles near Paris crowded by Giant Oaks. Also because there is the problem of fog and snow storms and a very tricky approach with steep Mountains. Scheduled service would be problematic as the big and regional Airlines do not pay the significant cost to train their Pilots to land in all weather conditions, on instrument only, with the exception of Alaska Airlines. There is also the cost of the "Fly by Wire" equipment upgrade and manning the control tower. There was talk of Scheduled service for the nearby 2010 Olympics but it never happen because of the need for the aforementioned all-weather instrument landing equipment, and a since resolved, lawsuit over Airport leases. Over last the few years, VoP has had more and more queries about the PRA.
