Pemba Dorje Sherpa is a Sherpa from beding, Rolwaling Valley, Dolkha, Nepal. On May 21, 2004 Lakpa Gelu Sherpa, who previously held the speed record on Everest has challenged Pemba Dorje Sherpa new speed record on Everest. If this sounds familiar, last year Pemba Dorje Sherpa set the speed record, then Lakpa Gelu Sherpa broke Pemba Dorjee Sherpa speed record. Pemba Dorjee Sherpa then challenged Lakpa Gelu Sherpa time. Lakpa Gelu Sherpa record held up... Pemba Dorje Sherpa record is expected also to hold up.

Background for 2004

The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has the pleasure to release this news that Mr. Pemba Dorje Sherpa (27 yrs), a High Altitude Sherpa of "Dream Everest Expedition 2004" from Gaurishankar - 1, Dolakha, Nepal has been successful to summit Mt. Sagarmatha (Everest), the highest (8848 m.) peak of the World, by setting a new world record of fastest climbing. He completed the distance from Sagarmatha Base Camp to the summit in 8 hours and 10 minutes by starting at 6 P.M. on 20 May 2004 and reaching the summit at 02.10 A.M. on 21 May 2004.

The previous world record was 10 hours 56 minutes and 46 seconds set by Mr. Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa (36 yrs) Climbing Sirdar from Solukhumbu on 25 May 2003.
