Pava Mannippu (English: Clemency) is a 1961 Tamil language drama film directed by A. Bhimsingh. The film features Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Savitri, M. V. Rajamma, Devika and M. R. Radha in lead roles. The film, produced by Buddha Pictures, had musical score by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy and was released on 16 March 1961.[3] The film was the first South Indian film to receive the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film. The film revolved around the theme of religious harmony with characters belonging to Hindu, Muslim and Christian communties.[2] The film was dubbed into Telugu as Papa Pariharam.

Plot

Three children adopted from their by birth homes and raised by foster parents grow up in Muslim, Christian and Hindu households. But will they ever reunite with their original families?

Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Savitri, Devika, M. R. Radha, T. S. Balaiah, M. N. Nambiar and S. V. Subbiah co-star in this complicated melodrama about the actions of one dishonest man and the effect they have on the next generation.

Production

The story of the film was narrated by Chandrababu to Bhimsingh. Bhimsingh was impressed and decided to direct the film under his production banner and the project was titled Abdulla.[4][5] After shooting 2000 feet with Chandrababu, the film got stopped as Bhimsingh had faced many issues and was not convinced with the way the film was came.[4] AVM Saravanan shown the portions of the film to his father Meiyappan. Meiyappan asked Bhimsingh to do the film under the partnership of AVM. Bhimsingh then approached Sivaji Ganesan to take up the lead role, scrapped the film taken till then and reshot it with Sivaji under the new title Pava Mannippu, the film was produced by Bhimsingh under his banner Buddha Pictures along with AVM Productions.[4][5]

The music was composed by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy.[6] All the songs were well received. G. Dhananjayan in his book Pride of Tamil Cinema - 1931 to 2013 wrote that "Major plus point for the success of the film was invigorating music and scintillating songs by Vishwanathan — Ramamoorthy".[4] Randor Guy of The Hindu wrote that "Kannadasan’s lyrics contributed significantly to the success of the film" and also noted that "music by Viswanathan-Ramamurthi played a great part in Pava Mannippu’s success".[7] P. B. Srinivas attained fame through the song "Kaalangalil". Bhimsingh and MS Viswanathan convinced Meiyappan to make Srinivas to render the song.[8] A remix version of "Vandha Naal Mudhal" is featured on music artist M. Rafi's album Aasaiyae Alaipolae.[9]

Marketing

To publicise the film, producer A. V. Meiyappan had conducted contests on Radio Ceylon in 1961.[4][10] AVM also publicised the film by using a giant size hellium balloon in Mount Road which attracted controversy as the necessary permission from Aviation authorities was not taken to fly a balloon.[11][4]
