Patan is a town and a nagar panchayat in Durg district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh.
Geography
Patan is located at 21°02′N 81°32′E / 21.03°N 81.53°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 280 metres (918 feet).
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[2] Patan had a population of 8,698. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Patan has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 59%. In Patan, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
History
Patan was a hotbed of Indian freedom struggle. Sri M. P Sawarni, Uday Ram Verma, Uday Ram Dikoria and many others from this region were involved in freedom struggle against the British Raj
Education
Patan High School was built sometime around 1953. The school has produced several great students, mostly the next generation Indians after freedom struggle. They were ready to conquer and to take the lead in nation building. Some of the best students of Patan High School left their mark in society with their achievements.
One of the most famous personality of the patan town was DR.KAMAL KISHORE JAISWAL.The first MBBS doctor from NAGPUR medical college in 1953.He was posted to patan as a government doctor and saved the life of numbers of people from cholera which was at that time was an epidemic disease.he served the people till the end of the life.people loved him so much that they didnot let him go from here.he left the world in 27th feb 1978.he still is alive in the hearts of the patan and related village people..... ..... ...his two sons dr Lalit jaiswal and dr satish jaiswal r still serving the people with full devotion and love.and too his grand daughter dr tanya jaiswal.... .. .......
. One of the most prominent personality of this town and was Dr. Krishna Kumar Sharma. He served this area not only as doctor but also as great social and spiritual personality better known as Dr. Sharma in entire location. He was instrumental in creating health facilities(Govt Hospital as well Dr. Sharma Hospital), Spiritual works(Maa Gayatri Shakti Peeth) and also in many social fronts.
Prof. Bhagwati Kashyap went on to finish his PhD and worked in US and Canada for several years before joining faculty of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science at IIT Bombay.
Brigadier Vijay Kashyap joined army after engineering on the call of duty after 1971 war with Pakistan. After outstanding service in Army he became professor of management and later joined private company as executive.
Dr. Lokeshwar Nath Verma was the first Ph.D. holder from University of California, Riverside, USA in agricultural sciences from this region who rose to become the first Director of National Bio Fertilizer Development Center (NBDC) under Ministry Of Agriculture, Government Of India. A scholar throughout his career, he is still contributing to the society by imparting training for increased utilization of bio-fertilzers to the farmers in rural areas.
Manharan Lal Verma joined Bhilai Steel plant after his engineering and held high office in BSP. After superannuation from Bhilai Steel Plant, he is serving POSCO ENC as General Manager(Technical)
Dr. Devendra Mohan Mishra completed his MBBS from Gwalior medical college and took job of a government doctor. Half of his career was spent in Patan serving people in local public health clinic. He preferred to continue serving people of Patan in his personal capability even after retirement as deputy chief medical officer. He continues to do so even today despite of his failing health.
Dr. K. K. Sharma was a in the field of Medicine in this area. Having started his career as a Medical officer in the Govt. Hospital, he devoted all his life in the treatment and welfare of the poor and most needy person of this area. Though he left this world in the year 1996 December the 8th his marks can be seen in his sons, Rakesh a Physician, Rajesh a Surgeon, Yogesh a Civil Engineer and Shailesh, a Metallurgical Engineer, who have taken over the trend set by the father to serve the humanity with due guidance of the mother 'Karuna'. She is a daughter of freedom fighter late Pt. Chandrika Prasad Pandey, who was a peer of Legend Vinoba Bhave. and last but not in the list the farmers of chhattisgarh is the main important but these works in that region in villages belongs that Patan that are very dry and problems of the agent of rice millers of that commission of any crops.
