Panama (Tamil: பாணமை, Sinhalese: පාණම) is a coastal village in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. It is 126 Km south of Batticaloa along the east coast and last populated settlement can be seen in the southernmost part of the province. Kumana Bird Sanctuary and Heritage park starts southwards from Panama village.
Panama was the capital of the Colonial Panamapattuwa of Mattakkalappu Desam. This ancient village can be seen in the historical maps of Portuguese and Dutch as Panao, Panova, Paneme and so on. Its inhabitants are mixed people of Sinhalese and Tamils. Panama is still famous for its Pattini Cult.
