Pals Rice
Pals rice is a rice produced in Empordà and is sold under the name "Arroz de Pals", it is top quality and is packaged in bottles. The varieties well-known that are cultivated in Pals are Bahia and Bomba as most traditional, and Carneroli and Nembo as most current. It is ideal for all types of dishes, especially for cooking rice on casserole, typical dish ampurdanes that still the rice is not paste and remains under-cooked. Product adhering to the quality label "Productes de l'Empordà" (Emporda products).[1] This mark guarantees that the products are produced, processed and packaged in the Emporda. Passing periodically you control the quality.[2] The sowing period extends from end of Abril to start of may and the period of harvest from the end of September to the end of October.[3]
History
Rice cultivation in Pals began in the fifteenth century. It is believed to have been introduced by the Arabs of Valencia. Cultivation was limited to the late eighteenth century to eliminate diseases caused at that time. In 1900 Pals gave permission to return to planting rice.[4]
