Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA), organized in 1927, is a nonprofit educational and professional organization headquartered in Missoula, Montana. OWAA was founded by a small group of writers during an Izaak Walton League convention held in Chicago, IL. The organization's original 19 members were professional writers for newspapers, magazines and book publishers whose efforts at the time were focused on fishing, hunting and protecting natural resources. Over the years, OWAA expanded to include illustrative art, photography, radio, television, DVDs and video about the outdoors. OWAA publishes a bimonthly trade magazine, Outdoors Unlimited, as well as an annual membership directory. They have also published a few smaller trade publications such as the Outdoor Reference Manual (2006) and the Freelancers' Guide to Business Practices (2009).
