Peter Milton Walsh is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist best known for his band, The Apartments.
Pre-Music Career
Walsh left school at 15 to join the Stardust Circus in which he developed his acoustic guitar technique through playing Irish, English and American folk music.[1] With the proceeds from his earnings, he travelled to Morocco and from there moved to London as a boat painter's brush-hand for the socialite Lord Torrington.[2]
The Apartments
From his experiences in the carny, he began to rekindle his interest in guitar playing, and established a four-piece band The Apartments, adopting their name from the 1960 film, The Apartment. The Apartments performed around Brisbane between 1978 and the following year before breaking up in October. In that time, the band recorded an EP, Return of the Hypnotist; with its title drawing inspiration from one of the Stardust Circus's sideshow acts. Between November 1978 and January 1979, Walsh was the 4th member of fellow Brisbane band, The Go-Betweens where he played lead guitar over the summer whilst concurrently playing in The Apartments. During that short period of time, his guitar work made its way to a couple of recordings made for the Berserkley label in Great Britain.[3]
The 1980s to Present
In January 1980, Walsh decided to quit music and moved to New York City after feeling disillusioned with the Punk Scene in Brisbane. It was there where he was involved in a high-speed collision whilst taking up his new (and short-lived) post as a chauffeur driver for The New Yorker's staff writer, Janet Malcolm.[4]
Since 1984, Walsh reformed The Apartments where he continues to sporadically record and perform from his Sydney base.
