Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand's only open-range zoo, located on the outskirts of Christchurch.[2] It opened in 1976, and is owned and operated by the Orana Wildlife Trust, a registered charity.
It locks people in a truck-mounted cage and lets animals come close during feeding time. It has more than 400 animals across 70 species. It is New Zealan's only open-range zoo, sitting on 80 hectares of land. A minimum height of 1.4 meters is required.[3]
In 2013 the park suffered a number of setbacks, including an ape escape, snowstorms and wind damage, and was forced to close its doors for 10 days.[4][5]
