The Opel Adam[1][2] is a city car engineered and produced by the German car manufacturer Opel, and named after the company's founder Adam Opel. It is sold under the Vauxhall marque in the United Kingdom. It was launched in France, at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, with sales starting in early 2013.
Overview
Adam is available in three different trim levels: Adam JAM, Adam GLAM and Adam SLAM. They are available in a wide choice of exterior colours, three roof colours, different interior colours, decors and various headliners - including an LED lit “starlight” roof trim - and other premium design elements. Wheel sizes range from 15” to 18”, and cars that are specified with 17” or 18“ rims come standard with a more responsive Sports chassis and steering feeling. The Adam is offered with no less than 61,000 combination possibilities for the exterior and over 82,000 for the interior.
Production began at the Eisenach plant in Germany in January 2013 beside the Corsa. Opel claims this to be the only car of its class being manufactured in Germany.
The Adam is based on a shortened version of Corsa D platform. The three-door hatchback measures 3.70 metres in length and 1.72 metres in width, seats four people comfortably, and is Vauxhall’s first entrant into a segment which has grown by 30 per cent since 2000.[3]

Awards
The Opel Adam has won the Red Dot Design Award in 2013 for Car Design.[4] As winner of the “product design 2013” award in the “Automotive and Transport” category, the Adam successfully “asserted itself against extremely intense competition”.
In 2012 “Auto Zeitung” readers in Germany voted for Opel Adam as the number one city car.[5] With 30 percent of the votes cast, Adam consigned the VW Up and the Skoda Citigo to second and third place (26.3 and 8.9 percent respectively).
The Opel Adam was awarded the design prize for the best interior in a production car at the “Automotive Interiors EXPO 2013” trade show in Stuttgart.[6] The iconic urban car came out ahead of strong competitors like Alfa 4C, Jaguar F-Type, Renault Clio and the new Range Rover. The Expo Award is part of the trade show for concepts, materials, surfaces, fabrics and components in vehicle interior equipment. A jury consisting of respected motor journalists from around the world selects the winners in seven categories. The Opel Adam is a real winner, and its list of accolades just got longer.
In the 38th Readers’ Choice Award of the respected trade magazine Auto Motor und Sport, the lifestyle car won the overall ranking with 24.2 percent of the votes in the mini car category, edging out the VW Up (23.9 percent) and the Mini (16.6 percent).[7]
The car has also been nominated for the T3 Magazine Gadget Awards 2014, in the category of Car of the Year facing competition from the Porsche 918 Spyder, McLaren P1 and Tesla Model S amongst others.[8]
Engines
All powertrains are available with an ecoFLEX technology pack including fuel-saving start/stop technology. From launch, there are a choice of three engines: 1.2 L 70PS (124 g/km CO2), and 1.4 L with 87 PS and 100 PS (129 g/km CO2). All engines are available with an ecoFLEX with start/stop system with lower CO2 emission - 1.2 ecoFLEX with 118 g/km and 1.4s with 119 g/km.
In August 2013, Opel introduced an all-new 1.0 three cylinder SIDI Turbo engine, with direct injection and Start/Stop system, which have under 100 g/km CO2 emission and is Euro 6 compliant. This new engine will be available from Spring 2014.[9][10]

Marketing
As part of Opel ADAM launch, Bryan Adams created a calendar entitled 'ADAM by Bryan Adams'. In addition, Bryan Adams created an ADAM according to his own artistic design – in a camouflage look. The result was to be unveiled in a vernissage in the museum Haus der Kunst in Munich between 2014-01-23 and 2014-01-26.[11]
The ‘Opel ADAM & Vale for charity’ auction is launched on eBay. The funds raised in the auction will be donated to the Meyer Children’s Hospital Foundation – Meyer O.N.L.U.S. in Florence. The unique and funky car was completed in three months by Opel brand ambassador Valentino “Vale” Rossi and star designer Aldo Drudi. Aldo Drudi redesigned the livery and interior that is now fitted with Dainese leather. Just as visible is the creative influence of Valentino Rossi. The star of the Moto GP championship, who is also known by his nickname “The Doctor”, has added his own personal touches to the individualization champion with numerous ideas. Therefore, for example, Rossi’s racing number 46 in neon colors adorns the exterior while his own signature is written across the hood.[12]
Musician VV Brown has partnered with Vauxhall Motors to personalise and design her very own Vauxhall ADAM car. The design for the car was inspired by VV’s album which features a darker sound, influenced by the likes of Bjork and James Blake. The car features a sleek matte black body with a geometric print across the roof and bonnet.[13] VV Brown’s Vauxhall ADAM follows recent collaboration’s with creatives including Katy England, James Small, Fred Butler, Louise Gray, Sir Peter Blake, Gary Card, The Idler Academy and Richard Benson.
Vauxhall ADAM has spread the love with its campaign - #kissADAM celebrating Valentine’s Day 2014.[14]
Sales
Opel had planned to sell between 40,000 and 50,000 units a year in Europe[15] and sold over 45,000 in its first year,[16] despite sales were still in start-up mode in the first two months of 2013. Year-over-year sales have increased every month in the first four months of 2014.
Rally
Adam Cup
The Adam Cup was introduced by Opel in November 2012. It is a rally car based on the Opel Adam. In Germany, the brand championship is named: ADAC OPEL Rally Cup and is held together with ADAC. Originally a starting field of 20 participants was under consideration, which has been increased to 24 participants due to the great rush to the starter courses. Beginning in March 2013, a collaboration with the FFSA was announced to align an Adam Cup with 17 participants in France. The vehicles will be built by Holzer Motorsport and feature a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine and a five-speed transmission from Sadev with a mechanical multi-disc locking differential.
