Vishnuvardhana is a 2011 Kannada comedy thriller film starring Sudeep, Bhavana Menon and Priyamani. The film was directed and written by P. Kumar, in his debut, and produced by veteran actor Dwarakish. The film is supposedly a tribute to south super star, Kannada Matinee Idol Dr. Vishnuvardhan who was a friend of Dwarakish. The film's music was composed by V. Harikrishna. The film was released on 8 December 2011.^[1] The film was officially remade as Bachchan in Bengali.The core-concept of the movie was reported to be inspired by the 2009 South Korean thriller Handphone which the film's director P. Kumar vehemently denied.^[2]

The Bangalore Mirror gave the film a rating of three and a half stars. It also lauded the debutant director P.Kumar and praised the screenplay. It added that the movie had all the ingredients of a commercial success.^[3] Chitraloka website said it was a comedy thriller and lauded the film saying it had a terrific script which sustains the interest of audience added to these plus point powerful performances by Sudeep and Priyamani.^[4] The Times of India gave 4 stars and praised the performances of Sudeep.^[5]

Release and box office

The movie got released in around 140 theatres all over Karnataka.^[6] The satellite rights of the film was sold for ₹20 million (US$290,000)^[7] The distributor Kumar MN said that the collection is ₹60 million (US$880,000) in 1 week. The collection made by the movie has crossed ₹120 million (US$1.8 million) before the completion of second week. It is mostly the huge fan following of Vishnuvardhan who have watched the film initially and now it is followed by the Sudeep fans and Vishnuvardhan fans together pouring in to watch the film repeatedly.^[8] Finally movie declared blockbuster hit of the year collected over ₹160 million (US$2.4 million).

Title controversy

Ever since the movie went on floors with the title Vishnuvardhana, there was a strong opposition against the usage of the title by some of the groups. This opposition was led by Dr.Vishnuvardhan's wife, actress Dr.Bharathi Vishnuvardhan. Dwarakish, along with his associate producer Yogish, struggled hard to fight the accusations. Finally, the title was changed to Veera Vishnuvardhana and was later changed again to Only Vishnuvardhana.^[9][10]

Remake

The movie was remade in Bengali as Bachchan starring Jeet, Aindrita Ray, Payel Sarkar, Kanchan Mullick and Mukul Dev in lead roles and also in Telugu starring Ravi Teja in the lead^[11] The director of the movie is trying to remake the movie in Tamil as well.^[12]

Soundtrack

V. Harikrishna has composed five songs along with the background score for this film. The audio was formally released on 1 December 2011 and a private radio station the songs were released on the same day.^[13] The lyrics are penned by lyricists such as Nagendra Prasad, Kaviraj and Yogaraj Bhat. Ashwini Media works has taken up the audio distribution rights for 3.6 million rupees.^[14]
