Ola Bola is a 2016 Malaysian sports football film directed by Chiu Keng Guan. The film tells about the glories of Malaysia national football team which successfully entered the 1980 Summer Olympics. The film was released in Malaysian cinemas on 28 January 2016.
Plot
Ola Bola tells the story of a journalist named Marianne who was commissioned to research the Malaysia national football team which has made its mark on the era of the 1980s which was feared by opponents, especially in the Asian region. Marianne began to feel disillusioned with her working life in Malaysia and decided to emigrate to England. Before she left for England, she decided to complete her work for the last time. However, Marianne discovered a story so amazing, literally changing her life.
Looking back at the 1980s, the national football team faces the challenges where players have different opinions and not aligned, causing defeats in matches. The situation became more complicated when nearly every player had an issue and problems. However, they only have a chance to play for international glory. So, the players must put aside their personal matters for the sake of the nation. When the passion is re-ignited themselves, the national team challenge to break their spirit and hope for the nation.
Ola Bola is a fictional tale inspired by real events from different nations to work together to feel the spirit of togetherness and goodwill. The story will showcase the spirit, uniqueness and strength is in its diversity of race and culture in Malaysia.
