The Oaxaca FilmFest is an eight-days long film festival held every autumn in the colonial Mexican city of Oaxaca since 2010. The festival is composed of various categories and offers a large space in its selection to emerging directors and scriptwriters. In 2015, Oaxaca Film Fest 6 runs from October 9 to 17.

After only three years since being founded, the festival has been listed by Movie Maker Magazine as one of the most attractive festivals for 2013 (Top 50 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee, Annual List), which contributes to making it one of the most important film festival in Latin America.[1]

In 2012, Oaxaca FilmFest joined the Red Mexicana de Festivales Cinematograficos and hosted the annual conference in April 2013.[2]

History

The first edition of the festival was held in November 2010 under the name “Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente y Video en Oaxaca”. About 115 films from 30 different countries were part of the official selection.[3]

In 2011 the Oaxaca FilmFest Screenwriting Competition, Oaxaca FilmFest Work in Progress Section and Oaxaca FilmFest Film Market were established as part of the festival.[4]

The third edition of 2012 was the first one officially held under the name Oaxaca FilmFest. The festival continued its rapid growth by expanding its seleccion to about 190 films and 300 projections.[5]

With Oaxaca FilmFest 4 the time in which the festival takes changed from November to September.[6]

Awards

Each year the festival awards the Agave Award in various categories such as Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature and Best Narrative Short. In addition Oaxaca FilmFest rewards outstanding achievements (e.g. Best Actor or Best Production) with Honorary Awards.[7]

The awards are determined by an international jury.[8]

The Agave Award statuette was designed by the plastic artist Alejandro Santiago.[9]
