The Government College of Engineering, Keonjhar is a state run higher education institute located in Keonjhar, Odisha, India, focusing on education and research in the field of Mining Engineering. It was established in the year 1956 as a diploma institute and subsequently degree streams were added in the year 1995. It was originally called the Orissa School of Mining Engineering (OSME) and in the year 2012 it was renamed to its present name. It is of the constituent colleges of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT).
History
Government College of Engineering, Keonjhar ("A Constituent college BPUT,Odisha") formerly known as Orissa School of Mining Engineering (Degree Stream) is the only government Engineering college in North Odisha. The institute initially started under Department of Industries, Government of Odisha in 1956 offering Diploma education in Mining Engineering and later in 1995 introduced degree curriculum.Thereafter in 1997, Electrical Engineering & Mechanical Engineering branches were added as an expansion program. In the year 2006, Govt. of Odisha declared Orissa School of Mining Engineering (Degree Stream) as a constitute college of Biju Pattnaik University of Technology, Rourkela under self finance mode to develop it as a centre of excellence in the field of Engineering & Technology. In the year 2008, Mineral Engineering & in the year 2009, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering were added. In the year 2015, Computer Science Engineering and Civil Engineering were also added. (As per a government notification in the year 2011 it has been declared as a full-fledged Government Engineering College).
Campus
The present campus of Government College of Engineering, Keonjhar is located in the beauties of rich green Keonjhar district.The institute has it sprawling campus of over 45 acres at the foothills of mountain near Judia ghat amidst sylvan surrounding in the outskirts of Keonjhar city with NH no.6 & NH no.215 running along its two sides. Centrally located with many cities & industries of importance the college is well connected in roads with Bhubaneswar (217 km), Cuttack (185 km), Rourkela (210 km), Sambalpur (230 km), mining hub Barbil (70 km), Jamshedpur (174 km), Kolkata (354 km). Nearest railways station is Kendujhargarh (5 km) & nearest airport is Bhubaneswar (240 km).The districts is blessed with rich mineral resources, lush green forest, natural landscapes, beautiful waterfall and rich biodiversity. The area is spiked with hills and ridges and dimpled with verdant valleys.

Admission procedure
The students are admitted through JEE-MAIN or OJEE National level entrance test. There is also provision of Lateral Entry of 10% of sanctioned intake for diploma holders directly to the third Semester in their respective branch of study as per the BPUT guidelines. For diploma holders to get admission into 3rd semester they have to apply and pass in OJEE. Also,some seats are reserved for diploma engineering as per the rules of SCTE & VT, Odisha and DTET.
Training and Placement
Training and Placement cell GCE provides placement assistance to the students. Various personality development programs, group discussions, seminars,etc. are convened from time to time and sharpen the quality and skill of the students .Companies are invited for on-campus selections through institution’s industrial link ups. Many companies visit the college to recruit students. Training and placements is responsible for liaisoning with various companies for summer training programme.
Though training has not been made compulsory, after 2nd year, students are encouraged to go for it. Vocational Practical Training is a curricular requirement here, the main objective being to give the engineering students a scope to supplement their class room knowledge and have wide exposure to active industrial life and environment before they step into the real professional world. Every student has to take a minimum of 30 days Practical Training with having undertaking .
Quite often in-house summer training programs are also organised by institutions on different advanced topics. Training programs in software field, such as, JAVA.NET, ASP.NET, SQL-2000 and many others too are convened from time to time. After 2nd year, students are encouraged to go to different organisations for training during summer vacations. Besides these, the students are also involved in the local study tours to the nearby Industries during the 3rd, 5th & 7th Semesters to have a practical knowledge about various functions of the industries. Two faculty members also accompany them during such study tours.
The Training and Placement Department has a spacious Conference Hall which is well furnished . Adjacent halls are also available for written tests. Besides, the Conference Hall, has air-conditioned placement-room where Group discussions and Personal Interviews can be conducted.
The number of students has been placed in organizations like Satyam, Infosys, US Technology, Accenture, Essel Mining, Runguta Mines, Mesco, Crompton Greaves, Ultra Tech Cement, Mesco, Vedanta, Jayswal Neco, Paradeep Phosphates Limited, OCL Steel, IMFA, ACC Cements, Monnet, MGM Steels, Arya Iron and Steels, OCL Cement and many others.
