Nyenrode Business Universiteit, formerly spelled as Nijenrode, is a Dutch elite business school and the only private university in the Netherlands. Founded in 1946, it is located on a large estate in the town of Breukelen, between Amsterdam and Utrecht.

History

Nyenrode Business Universiteit, Dr Albert Heijn street

Nyenrode was founded in 1946 by top executives of Dutch multinational companies, such as Akzo, KLM, Philips, Shell and Unilever. This Nederlands Opleidings Instituut voor het Buitenland (NOIB) was soon named after the thirteenth century Castle of Nyenrode.

In 1982 it was recognized as a university by the Dutch government (Universiteit Nyenrode). In 1992 Nyenrode decided to become independent of Dutch government subsidies, because subsidised universities in the Netherlands were not allowed to have a selection process of students.

Situated on a 13th century estate, Nyenrode has a unique atmosphere to work and study. Nyenrode is the only private university in the Netherlands. In 1946, captains of industry from leading Dutch corporations as KLM, Shell, Unilever, Philips and Akzo, took the initiative to start an institute where an action-inclined, internationally focused generation of new business leaders would be educated. Main goal was to rebuild the economic position of the Netherlands and Dutch enterprises after WWII.

The Nijenrode estate is dominated by the thirteenth-century castle. Situated in a park-like estate and surrounded by a moat, the castle is a true eye-catcher. The Nijenrode estate is known for its beautiful landscape architecture. Since 2001, the estate has enjoyed the protection provided by the Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Act. Nyenrode has a strong international reputation in the field of business and management research and education. It maintains close ties with the national and international business communities, a fact that is reflected by its multinational student body. In addition to its educational programs for managers, business leaders and entrepreneurs, Nyenrode also offers a wide range of training programs, tailor made programs and incompany modules for managers in the corporate sector. Starting in September 2015 Nyenrode will also offer several programs for sports coaches and sports directors with Nyenrode Sports Inc.

Academics
