She is one of the most cited female computer scientist in Spain, with her research having been cited by more than 9000 publications.[2] She is well known for her work in computational models of human behavior,[3][4] human computer-interaction,[5] mobile computing[6][7] and big data for social good[8][9][10]

Biography

Nuria graduated with a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid in 1994.[11] She was awarded the Spanish First National Prize of Telecommunication Engineers in 1994.[12]

In 1995 she received a La Caixa fellowship[13] to study at MIT, where she received her doctorate at the Media Lab in the area perceptual intelligence. In 2001, she joined Microsoft Research.[1]

In 2004 she was named one of the top 100 innovators under 35 (TR100, today TR35) by MIT Technology Review, based on her work in intelligent human-computer interfaces.[5][14]

After twelve years in the US, she left Microsoft in 2008 to join Telefonica in Barcelona as Director of Multimedia Research, the only female director hired at Telefonica R&D at the time.[15][16]

She was named a Rising Talent by the Women's Forum for the Economy and Society in 2009.[17][18]

In 2009, she was selected as one of the "100 future leaders who will design Spain in the next decades" by El Capital Magazine.[19]

She was profiled as one of nine female Spanish leaders in technology in 2012 by the Spanish newspaper El País.[11][20]

In 2013 she received the Senior Member Award by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)[21] and in 2014 she received the IEEE Senior Member Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).[22]

She has received a best paper award for scientific publications at ACM RecSys 2012,[23] in ACM Ubicomp 2014 [6][24] and in ACM Ubicomp 2015,[25] and best paper award nominations for publications at ACM MobileHCI 2009,[26] ACM Multimedia 2009[27] and ACM CHI 2010, among others.[28][29]

In 2014, she received the ACM ICMI Ten Year Technical Impact Award for her work on layered graphical models of human behavior[30]

In 2015 she received the Distinguished Scientist Award by Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), being the first Spanish female computer scientist to receive this award.[31]
