Nuria Oliver is a computer scientist. She is Scientific Director at Telefónica. She holds a Ph.D. from the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is one of the most cited female computer scientist in Spain, with her research having been cited by more than 9000 publications.[2] She is well known for her work in computational models of human behavior,[3][4] human computer-interaction,[5] mobile computing[6][7] and big data for social good[8][9][10]
Biography
Nuria graduated with a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid in 1994.[11] She was awarded the Spanish First National Prize of Telecommunication Engineers in 1994.[12]
In 1995 she received a La Caixa fellowship[13] to study at MIT, where she received her doctorate at the Media Lab in the area perceptual intelligence. In 2001, she joined Microsoft Research.[1]
In 2004 she was named one of the top 100 innovators under 35 (TR100, today TR35) by MIT Technology Review, based on her work in intelligent human-computer interfaces.[5][14]
After twelve years in the US, she left Microsoft in 2008 to join Telefonica in Barcelona as Director of Multimedia Research, the only female director hired at Telefonica R&D at the time.[15][16]
She was named a Rising Talent by the Women's Forum for the Economy and Society in 2009.[17][18]
In 2009, she was selected as one of the "100 future leaders who will design Spain in the next decades" by El Capital Magazine.[19]
She was profiled as one of nine female Spanish leaders in technology in 2012 by the Spanish newspaper El País.[11][20]
In 2013 she received the Senior Member Award by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)[21] and in 2014 she received the IEEE Senior Member Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).[22]
She has received a best paper award for scientific publications at ACM RecSys 2012,[23] in ACM Ubicomp 2014 [6][24] and in ACM Ubicomp 2015,[25] and best paper award nominations for publications at ACM MobileHCI 2009,[26] ACM Multimedia 2009[27] and ACM CHI 2010, among others.[28][29]
In 2014, she received the ACM ICMI Ten Year Technical Impact Award for her work on layered graphical models of human behavior[30]
In 2015 she received the Distinguished Scientist Award by Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), being the first Spanish female computer scientist to receive this award.[31]
