The 3rd Nuestra Belleza México pageant, was held at the Centro de Convenciones of Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico on September 22, 1996. Thirty-two contestants of the Mexican Republic competed for the national title, which was won by Rebeca Tamez from Tamaulipas, who later competed in Miss Universe 1997 in the USA. Tamez was crowned by outgoing Nuestra Belleza México titleholder Vanessa Guzmán and Miss Universe 1996 Alicia Machado from Venezuela. She was the first Tamaulipeca and winner of foreign descent (her mother is an American) to win this Title.
The Nuestra Belleza Mundo México title was won by Yessica Salazar from Jalisco, who later competed in Miss World 1996 in India where she was a Semifinalist in the Top 10. Salazar was crowned by outgoing Nuestra Belleza Mundo México titleholder Alejandra Quintero. She is the first and only Jalisciense to win this Title.
For the first time, two events were held separately to select the two winners for the titles Nuestra Belleza México and Nuestra Belleza Mundo México.

Nuestra Belleza Mundo México
One week before the Final Competition was held the Preliminary Competition with a live show entitled "Nuestra Belleza México: Rumbo a Miss Mundo" in which was announced the winner of the Nuestra Belleza Mundo México title Yessica Salazar from Jalisco who represented the country in Miss World 1996 finished as a Semi-finalist. All contestants competed in swimsuit and evening gown during the contest.
The Nuestra Belleza Mundo México pageant was held at the Xcaret Park in Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico and was hosted by Marco Antonio Regil. It was the 1st edition of the "Nuestra Belleza Mundo México" contest and as an Official separate pageant to choose Mexico's representative to Miss World. Although the Winner of this event also competed in the Final Competition, but finished only as a Semi-finalist.
The musical part was enlivened by groups: Manuel Mijares, José Luis Rodríguez "El Puma and Paul Anka.

Historical Significance
- Tamaulipas won the Nuestra Belleza México title for the first time.
- This was the first time a Winner of Nuestra Belleza México pageant is of foreign descent (Rebeca Tamez, her mother is American).
- Jalisco won the Nuestra Belleza Mundo México title for the first time.
- Veracruz was the Suplente/1st Runner-up for the first time.
- The 32 delegates from the States of México entered the stage singing the Official Anthem of the Nuestra Belleza México pageant wearing the typical dress of the State pageant headquarters: Quintana Roo.
- For the first time in the semifinal competition is chosen Nuestra Belleza Mundo México through Nuestra Belleza México: Rumbo a Miss Mundo.
- The Winner of Nuestra Belleza Mexico: Rumbo a Miss Mundo is also involved in the final competition, more not if it will win the title of Nuestra Belleza México, the right to represent México in Miss World would become the 1st Runner-up of the semi-final competition.
- Sinaloa, Distrito Federal, Sonora, Jalisco, Nuevo León and Querétaro placed for the third consecutive year.
- Yucatán, Veracruz, Nayarit, Chihuahua and Quintana Roo placed for the second consecutive year.

- Raúl Velasco hosted the pageant for the third consecutive time.
- Marco Antonio Regil hosted the semi-final competition Nuestra Belleza México: Rumbo a Miss Mundo.
- Tamaulipas won Miss Photogenic and the Skin Hinds Award for the first time.
- Querétaro won the Best Smile Award for the first time.
- The host delegate, Ivette Zelaya from Quintana Roo placed in the Top 16.

- Chihuahua – Banelly Carrasco represented Mexico in the Reinado Internacional del Café 1997 held in Manizales, Colombia. Also she competed in Miss Verano Viña del Mar 1996 but she didn't place.
- Jalisco – Yessica Salazar in Miss World 1996 held in M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in the city of Bangalore, India, she placing among the semi-finalists and placed 8th overall on November 22, 1996 . During the pageant, Yessica was also awarded the title of Miss Spectacular Beach Wear, today is a Mexican actress. She was part of the artistic cast of the Telenovela "Rosalinda", "Serafín", "La Usurpadora" and "El Juego de la Vida". She participated in the Telenovela "Rebelde" production of Mr. Pedro Damián in the role of Valeria. We saw in the movie "Como tú me has Deseado" and the telenovela "Camaleones", production of Rosy Ocampo.
- Nayarit – Tania Vázquez was the representative of her country in the event Miss Costa Maya International 1997 but she didn't place, today is a television actress. She studied at the CEA and took an acting course with Patricia Reyes Espindola. Her career in Telenovelas starting with "María Isabel" remains "Amor Gitano", "Mujeres Engañadas", "Rayito de Luz", "Amor Real" and the telenovela "Rubí", production of José Alberto Castro, on paper of Sofia. Her last appearance on television was in the telenovela "Maána es para Siempre".
- Nuevo León – Blanca Martínez represented Mexico in the international contest of Nuestra Belleza Internacional 1996 in Miami but she didn't place.
- Quintana Roo – Ivette Zelaya competed in Miss Caraïbes Hibiscus 1996 but she didn't place.
- Tamaulipas – Rebeca Tamez represented Mexico in Miss Universe 1997 held in Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Florida, US on May 16, 1997, but she didn't place. She also represented Mexico in Señorita Continente Americano 1997 held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras where she won the 1st place. She was part of the musical group Garibaldi, after studying at the CEA of Televisa. Participated in the telenovela "Átrevete a Olvidarme" and in many major commercial brands. She is a Professional Model.
