The Northern Link will be a rail link of MTR[1] rapid transit/railway system of Hong Kong which connects the West Rail Line and the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line of the East Rail Line. The link will also serve as a connection to the border checkpoint to mainland China for passengers of the western part of the New Territories.[2] The Northern Link will start at Kam Sheung Road and end at Lok Ma Chau, where it will terminate at the East Rail Lok Ma Chau Spur Line station. Proposals recommend a new station to be built at Chau Tau for interchange between this link and East Rail Line.

Other benefits for constructing this project is that it will significantly cut journey times for certain trips (for example from Yuen Long to Fanling) as well as significantly reduce costs for these trips and also relieve the large number of passengers using the East Rail Line by diverting some of the passengers to the West Rail Line.

According to "Railway Development Strategy 2014", the shuttle service between Kam Sheung Road Station and Kwu Tung Station which spans 10.7 km is expected to begin construction in 2018 and inaugurate in 2023.[3]
