North Nazimabad Town (Urdu: شمالی ناظم آباد ٹاؤن) is a town in the northern part of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. North Nazimabad named as such in reference to it being north of the suburb of Nazimabad. The town is bordered by New Karachi Town to the north across the Shahrah-e-Zahid Hussain, Gulberg Town to the east across the Gujjar Nala stream, Liaquatabad Town to the south, and SITE Town to the west.

History

Before the independence of Pakistan, the area of the present day Nazimabad was semi-arid land with small Sindhi and Balochi villages nearly 10 KM from downtown Karachi. The Government of Pakistan bought the land in 1950 from the local landlord and tribal leader Masti Brohi Khan in order to resettle the Muslim refugees from India that were living in tent cities in central Karachi. Nazimabad was planned and developed starting in 1952 to and the land was sold at reduced prices to the refugees. This suburb was named after Khawaja Nazimuddin who was the second Governor-General of Pakistan, and later the second Prime Minister as well. It was planned and designed in late 50s by Carlo Scarpa & Aldo Rossi, the Italian planners and architects.

In late 1958, the northern area of Nazimabad, was to be developed as KDA Scheme 2 aka Taimooria by Karachi Improvement Trust (KIT). The name North Nazimabad became popular and was later adopted instead of Taimooria.[1] Taimooria or Timuria was named after Amir Timur the progenitor of Mughal Empire of South Asia. North Nazimabad was developed as a residential area for federal government employees. But in the early 1960s the capital of Pakistan was transferred from Karachi to newly developed capital Islamabad. On account of these two factors it is ranked as the most modern-planned town of Karachi, with blocks located alphabetically. North Nazimabad Town has a comparatively high literacy rate amongst other towns in whole Pakistan [2] and a relatively low crime rate. It is considered an upper middle class town of the city.

North Nazimabad Town was created when President Pervez Musharraf introduced the Local Government Ordinance of 2001[3] that created towns in major cities for better local government.[4]
