Nilüfer which is the newest and most planned-organized district of Turkey's 4th biggest city Bursa, is named after the Nilüfer River which is flowing across her. Established in 1987, the Municipality of Nilüfer has created a city with modern standards in all aspects and today became an attraction center.

Nilüfer is surrounded by traces of history and the cultural and natural heritages that carry these traces, take the history of the region back to ancient ages. Historical richness of Nilüfer, has also been taken under protection by being registered by Bursa Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board.

The population is 375,474. The change during the years in the population structure of Nilüfer, demonstrates that the district is the most rapidly urbanizing region of Bursa.

The age distribution of the population is %28 aged 0-19; %64 aged 20-59; %8 aged 60 and over.

The slogan of Nilüfer adopted is ''Smile you are in Nilüfer''.

That means that people always have a smile on their faces. Because all round is adorned with the beauty of the Water Lily (Nilüfer) reflecting on the water surface. Nilüfer citizens smile because they are the administrators of the city rather than administrated. The progressive administrive means such as governing the city with citizens, governance, democratic pluralistic participation are processed with all institutions and rules within Nilüfer. And we all work very hard in our efforts for the vision of our municipality; to be a representative and leader local government and well-known at international level with our service standards and management excellence.

Nilüfer ranks the first place amongst the districts of Bursa contributing to the economy of Turkey and Bursa. The very first Organized Industrial Zone of Turkey has been established within the district of Nilüfer in 1961. In Bursa OIZ which is 6,8 million square meters wide, approximately 30 thousand workers are being employed. Nilüfer is governed by a municipality council with 31 members. The council is elected for a five year term.

Name origin

The name of the district comes from Nilüfer River that passes through the district. Besides that also the name of the river comes from Nilüfer Hatun. According to traditional stories, Nilüfer Hatun ordered the building of a bridge over a river in Bursa and after the completion of bridge, both the river and the bridge were named "Nilüfer".[3]

History

Nilüfer district hosting the first settlement in Bursa Region as per some researchers, bears the traces of both Byzantine and Ottoman and the older periods in history. In Nilüfer; Tepecik Tumulus, Gölyazı and Tahtalı villages in Alaaddinbey Neighborhood and Aktopraklık Tumulus and Gölyazı islands region in Akçalar district are rich in historical findings. There are ruins of churches, mosques, baths, fountains, monasteries and castles in these regions together with historical remains and monument trees.

There are many historical structures scattered in different parts of Nilüfer. Mosques, bridges and baths from Ottomand region and church ruins remained from various times. Some of them are: H. Ioannes Theologos Church in Çatalağıl village, Saint Helena Church in Özlüce Neighborhood, Demirci Mosque, Yaylacık Mosque, Mihraplı Bridge. Also Misi village and Gölyazı district are the richest ancient settlement areas in Nilüfer. The history of the district goes back to 6th century B.C.[4]

Within this scope, Akçalar Aktopraklık Tumulus, Alaaddinbey Tepecik Tumulus, Gölyazı, Ürünlü where Kite Castle is located are proclaimed as archaeological SIT areas; the whole Gölyazı and Tahtalı Village as urban archaeological SIT areas; Gümüştepe (Misi) as urban SIT area. Balat forests, Fadıllı Village, Gölyazı Islands region, surroundings of Kayapa Pond, some parts of Odunluk and Ürünlü also taken under protection by being proclaimed as natural SIT area. The Municipality of Nilüfer who is a member of the Union of Historical Towns since 2005, is carrying out many projects for the purpose of conserve and maintain the historical and cultural heritage of the region.[5]

Climate

The weather of district shows characteristics of Marmara climatic region. While, the hottest month of the year is July, the coldest month is February. The rainy weather can be seen mostly in winter and spring time. The annual average precipitation is about 500–700 mm. The humidity in district is about 58% in average.

Industry

Nilüfer comes first among the districts of Bursa in terms of the economical contribution it provides to Turkey. Because, Bursa Organized Industry Area, Nilüfer Organized Industry area and Beşevler Small Industry Site, which provide employment opportunities for a great amount of Bursa population take place within the borders of Nilüfer. There are many other industry areas and business centers in Çalı, Kayapa, Hasanağa, Akçalar and Görükle under the body of Nilüfer. Nilüfer provides employment opportunities to 80% of Bursa population and derives great income for Turkey. The most important sectors within the district are textile, automotive, machine, spare parts and related industry products.[7]

Cultural activities

The cultural activities in district are organized mainly by Nilüfer Municipality. The Municipality provides several hobby and art classes in several activities, such as; drawing, sculpture, acting, photographing, ornament design, ebru, mosaic etc. Also several plays, concerts, exhibitions and conferences are performed every year in two culture centers (Konak Kültürevi and Uğur Mumcu Sahnesi) of municipality. In summer time, several open-air public concerts are given by different musicians as a part of two summer festivals organized by Uludag University and Nilüfer Municipality. Also there are several local, traditional festivals held by villagers and other small communities in district. Most of them originate from traditional harvest festivals.

Sports

In 2014, the Minareliçavuş Spor Tesisleri was opened consisting of two football fields. It is home to Yeşil Bursa AŞ playing in the TFF Third League.[8] [9]
