State Highway 52 is a former state highway that ran from Waipukurau to Masterton via Porangahau and through the hill country on the eastern side of the North Island.[1]
History
The road to Porangahau was approved by provincial council in April 1859 and constructed over the next year.[2]
The highway lost its state highway status because of the lack of traffic using it. The road is still open and because of its scenic qualities it is now a cycle touring route and noted as one of the must drive roads in New Zealand. The road narrow and winds through steep hill country. Wandering live stock and stock trucks are hazards.[3][4]
Route
The highway commenced from the intersection of SH2 and Porongahau Road, Waipukurau. From there it went through numerous small farm settlments. Heading south-east the highway went to Porongahau through Wanstead and Wallingford where it turned back inland in a SSW direction. From there it passed through Weber, Waione, Pongaroa, and Tiraumea before heading west to Alfredton. From Alfredton it headed in more southerly direction to Ihuraua the along Whangaehu Valley Road to its intersection with Te OreOre Bidford Road. At Te OreOre the highway turned west again into Te OreOre Road until it reached SH2 at Masterton.
