Nawada is a city and a municipality in Bihar. It is also the headquarters of Nawada district. Headquarters town of the subdivision of the same name, lying on both sides of the river Khuri in 24º 53’ N and 85º 33’ E. The name is a corrupt-ion of Nau-abad or the new town. .[2]

History

Nawada is a part of the famous ancient Magadh division of south Bihar. The origin of the name Nawada is believed to lie in a corruption of the old name Nau-abad or the new town which was earlier known as ‘The Eliot Market (Bazaar)’. Before its acquisition by the East India Company, Nawada was ruled by the nearly independent Rajas of Hisua, and after its acquisition it was the center of great disorder till 1845, when it became the headquarters of the newly created subdivision. The elements of disorder came to fore again during the Mutiny of 1857, when Nawada was overrun by marauding parties. The local offices were destroyed, but Government records were saved by the native officials who hid them in a cave in a neighboring hill. These are the only available public records dating back to an era before 1857, in the district.Two miles to the north, there is a handsome Jain temple standing in the middle of a large tank to the west of the public road, but city itself contains no important buildings and has but little historical interest.

Geography

Nawada is located at 24°53′N 85°32′E / 24.88°N 85.53°E / 24.88; 85.53.[3] It has an average elevation of 80 metres (260 ft). The city is divided into two blocks by the Khoori river, the left bank being the older, while the right bank is the modern section with public offices, sub-jail, dispensary and schools.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, Nawada city has a population of 109,141. Nawada has a sex ratio of 957 females for every 1000 males and average literacy rate is 74%, higher than the national average of 63.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 67%. In Nawada, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.[4] Hindi, Magahi and Urdu are the main languages spoken in the area.

Economy

Since the opening of The South Bihar Railway, on which it is stationed, Nawada has been growing into an important trade center. Earlier Nawada was the main market town for the surrounding villages. Purani Bazaar, Main Road, Gola Road and others are the chief commercial centers. Nawada has been growing into an important trade center.

Nawada has been growing as a big hub for sports competition both on district and state level. Nawada is in most famous forHandball and kho-kho in the state. In city area, there is a stadium known as Harishchandra stadium for outdoor games like cricket, football etc.Apart from that, there are 1 outdoor and 1 Indoor stadiums also available in the city.

Transport

The city is well connected by all other parts of the state by roadways and railways. The very famous National Highway NH 31 which is part of the Asian Highway Network and AH42 runs through Nawada and connects it to major cities like Kolkata, Asansol, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Dhanbad,Bihar Sharifand Patna.State Highway 8 runs through Nawada and connects it to other important parts of the district like Hisua, Pakri Barawan and to the neighbouring district Jamui. The city is also connected by the Indian Railway B.G. line through the Gaya–Kiul_line of East Central Railway.It connects two major railway stations Gaya jn and Kiul jn . Two express trains and several local trains run in this railway line via Nawada.For local transport, frequent Taxi facilities are provided by private vendors in and around the city.Rickshaws and Autos are major means of local transport within the town.

Tourist Place

Historians believe this place was a reputed religious center for the Hindus in the period of Palas.City has got a museum called the Narad Museum which was established in the year 1974.Some other significant temples and religious spots within the city are Surya Narayana Mandir, Shobhnath Mandir, Sankat Mochan & Gonawa Jal Mandir. The Surya Narayana Mandir of Handiya is the earliest & it is Supposed to be of Dwaparayuga. The Surya Narayana Mandir of Handiya is constructed by the King of Magadha Jarasandha, Jarasandha’s daughter Dhaniya was suffering from leprosy and used to stay this holy place every day for devotion. The Myth goes, she used to have bath in the nearby pond and was cured.Soon after Dhaniya established a place of worship of Maa Bhagwati in a close to village and a Shivalinga at Dhaniya hill, which is just away from main temple . Present time Handiya is the most remarkable place to visit for anyone. It is beautifully surrounded on the north side by Rajgir Mountain and on the south by river.Each year thousands of people come to visit this holy place. The Surya Narayana Mandir is also famous for betel nuts like Magahi Pan. Apart form these,famous tourist places like Kakolat_Falls, Bodhgaya, Pawapuri, Nalanda , Rajgir can be reached by road within 1–2 hours.
