The National Institute of Technology Hamirpur (commonly referred to as NIT Hamirpur) is a public engineering college located in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, India.[1] It is one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology established, administered and funded by Government of India.[1] It conducts undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Engineering and Architecture and Doctor of Philosophy programme in Engineering, Pure Science and Humanities.

History

Established in 1986 as Regional Engineering College, Hamirpur in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, it was a joint enterprise of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh.[1] On 26 June 2002 REC Hamirpur was awarded the status of deemed-to-be university and upgraded into an NIT. As a result of this transition the institute came under the sole purview of the Government of India. It has been awarded the status of Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament, and judged best NIT in terms of infrastructure by the World Bank.[2] For getting admission in NIT Hamirpur one has to clear the JEE MAINS examination in INDIA.

Undergraduate students are admitted through their performance in the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-MAIN) formerly All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Students are awarded Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degrees after eight semesters, while their counterparts in the field of architecture need to complete ten semesters to be awarded Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch).

Postgraduate programmes were introduced beginning with Master of Technology (M.Tech) in 2005 and Master of Sustainable Architecture (M.ARCH), Doctor of Philosophy in 2006 and Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2009. Admissions to the M.Tech programmes is by the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam. Doctorate admission is on the basis of previous research and interviews by the appropriate screening committees.

Facilities

Computer Center

Computer Center is a central facility, which caters to the needs of academic departments. The aim of the center is to provide professional services, promote and assist the use of new computing technology among the students, staff and administration.

The Computer Center manages computing and communication facilities throughout the campus.

Central Library

The institute library was set up in 1986 in one room of Government Polytechnic Hamirpur and was shifted to the institute campus in 1988 in Visvesvarya Block. At present it is in a separate building with the floor area of 3200 square meters. The library can seat 500 people in reading halls and 100 readers in the audio-visual hall. The library observes the following timing in weekdays and holidays:

Monday to Friday 9:15 AM to 12.00 midnight
Saturdays/Sundays/holidays 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM
Library NIT Hamirpur (H.P.) observes only the four national holidays, Republic Day, Independence Day, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Deepawali.

Sports

NIT Hamirpur provides sports facilities for indoor and outdoor games. Teams are sent out to compete in university-level sports competition. Sports facilities include cricket, football, lawn tennis, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton and athletics.[4]

Health Center

NIT Hamirpur has its own dedicated health centre for the better health care of its students and staff. It is equipped with basic medical facilities and in case of emergency, patients are referred to the Zonal Hospital, Hamirpur. The medical facilities are available free of cost to the students. An ambulance is available round the clock to face any kind of emergency.[5]

Campus

Dining Hall, Kailash Boys' Hostel

The institute campus is situated in the Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, India, at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level.

Being a residential institute, there are eleven boys' hostels and two girls' hostels, with residences for the faculty and staff. Some hostels have four-seated or triple-seated rooms, while others have doublets and singlets. Mega Hostel is the newest and largest in its capacity.

Festivities

Hill 'Ffair and Nimbus are the cultural and technical festivals respectively.

Hill 'Ffair

Hill 'Ffair is the most anticipated cultural event of the institute, organized at the national level, with the involvement of well known bands, singers, musicians, artist, poets and participants from all across the country. Three days of performance with over a wide genre of dance, music, drama at its disposal promises to enthrall the audience. The fact that the students of our institute and various other institutes showcase their talent makes Hill 'Ffair unique in its league. The overall events as drama, dance and music as well discipline specific events prove to be a cultural treat for all those attending the festival. The talented youth along with a plethora of renowned band artist, musicians and poets will be enjoying the extravaganza in the laps of the beautiful Himalayas.[7]

During the days of Hill 'Ffair the open-air theater becomes the nerve-center for all activity. The rock show, fashion parade, and the Mr. and Miss Hill 'Ffair competitions are some of the most popular events.[8]

Nimbus

Nimbus is the annual technical festival of National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, India. It is touted to be an amalgamation of ideas, expressions, innovations,prototypes, knowledge channels, taken to the most premier levels.

Clubs and societies

Team Prayas (Literacy Society)

The students run a literacy mission, Prayas, to help the poor children residing around the campus. Started in the Winter of 2004 by a group of second and third year students, the mission titled Prayas ("Effort") aims at providing education to the children of slum dwellers around the college campus. It aims to impart them the quality education and, hence enable them to stand firm in this competitive world. The daily classes of Literacy Mission are held at lecture halls of NITH which enrols more than 150 kids, 40 regular volunteers and a total of 100 volunteers. Sometimes, the volunteer-to-kid ratio becomes 1:2, which is seldom found in schools.[9]

GLUG-NITH

GNU/Linux User Group of NIT Hamirpur (GLUG NITH) organizes workshops, demonstrations and presentations. GLUG holds meetings regularly to discuss stuff related to open source, linux, and programming. It conducts workshop for its members promoting Linux OS, open source software and creating an environment of coding & collaboration among the students. Three of the members of this club were selected in GSOC (Google Summer of Code) 2014.[10]

Rotaract Club-NITH

Rotaract club, NIT Hamirpur is an affiliate of Rotary club Hamirpur and comes under R.I 3070 district of the Rotary International, active from last 8 years the club has rendered its services for the welfare of the people of Hamirpur. It offers a wide choice of social activities, actively supports the local community, raises money for charity, conducts blood donation campaign and gives the opportunity to develop personal skills and gain new life experiences in NIT hamirpur and outside.

Student associations

Every branch has their technical association with a staff head and executive body of students. They organize lectures, run quizzes, conduct workshops, talk about developments in the field, and conduct placement talks. They help in welcoming the first year students by conducting FRESHERS and showing them the principles and goals of their course.

Ranking

NIT Hamirpur has been ranked as the 30th best Engineering College of India in the Edu-Rand Rankings of 2015.[11] The survey was done jointly by Edu, an Indian company and Rand Corporation, a non-profit American thinktank.[12]
